Joanna McAfee Childhood Cancer Foundation, Inc.

Joanna McAfee Childhood Cancer Foundation, Inc. About Us The mission of the Joanna McAfee Childhood Cancer Foundation, Inc. is to raise awareness, provide support and fund research for childhood cancer.

Joanna Rae McAfee lived in Tampa, FL and Warner Robins, GA with her parents Jeff & Misty McAfee and older brother, Paul. She was 3 1/2 years old when she was diagnosed with Stage IV Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of pediatric cance...r. She spent half of her life undergoing one excruciating cancer treatment after another without complaint, while deeply touching many lives wi

th her sweet spirit, amazing determination and childlike faith. On December 22, 2005, our sweet Joanna took her last breath and left this Earth and her suffering behind. What a beautiful, wonderful child our world was blessed with for six years! Those of us closest to Joanna never want to forget the battle she fought. Her fighting spirit inspired us to create a foundation in her honor. Our purpose is to memorialize Joanna while helping other children stricken with cancer. We will strive to serve our purpose with a similar spirit, determination, and godliness as Joanna. Awareness Objective - Though pediatric cancer is rare, most people are unaware of the number of cancers that affect our children. Although strides have been made, survival rates remain very low for many of these cancers. Due to size, location and advanced stage of Joanna’s cancer, at diagnosis her chance of survival was only about 20%. Following relapse, her likelihood of survival was almost nonexistent. One of the main priorities of the foundation is to make others aware of how hard these children fight, even when faced with insurmountable odds, and how much work remains to be done to advance the search for a cure. Support Objective - We want to provide some relief to an ailing child from the difficulties and challenges of being sick. We also want to help the families who love, nurture and hurt for their children in some tangible way. The hard reality is that current treatment protocols and clinical trials will not cure many children of their cancer, and these families need our help today. Providing a donation, arranging a trip to an amusement park and providing a meal are just a few examples of kind gestures that make a big difference to the these families. Research Objective - Research represents the greatest promise for curing childhood cancer. Children deserve more than just treatment options. They deserve a cure and a hope for tomorrow. All types of childhood cancers respond differently to treatment, so options are needed that target specific types or groups of cancers like Sarcomas. Disturbing is the fact that the overall survival rate for pediatric sarcomas has not increased in the past 20 years. [Source: The Pediatric Cancer Foundation] Joanna died from Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma so we feel strongly that our first grants should fund either sarcoma research or Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma research, but we will reevaluate grant priorities each year.

Good Morning! Some have asked about the Foundation, so I thought I'd give a quick update. As most of you are aware, our family relocated to Florida in 2016. The Foundation is still active but on a much smaller scale. Most of our revenue is derived from "Joanna Tags" available in the state of Georgia. Our main focus is funding research for alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, the cancer that took our precious Joanna. We have no staff, we have very little overhead, and we don't promote via social media like we once did. Our same board is still active and at the end of the year we decide how much funding is available to fund research. For the past 16 years we have funded many institutions including Dana Farber, University of Pennsylvania, Vanderbilt, NIH, etc. As we learned more and received end-of-year reports there is one researcher that stood above them all - Dr. Frederic G. Barr. The post below is his report from last year. We are so excited! Although it is pretty technical, it is very positive and speaks to the promise his research has in determining treatment strategies for this tumor. We, as a Foundation, are very blessed and fortunate to have been a position to fund Dr. Barr for the last 15 years. Thanks to all of you who have continued to proudly display your tag and those who have supported us through it all.

We got a different car yesterday and in the process determined it IS possible to keep your original "Joanna Tag" with the CR (Cancer Research) prefix. Since Misty and I have the first two ever produced it is a big deal for us. We prefer the old plate over the new silk screened plate.
At first, the transfer request through the computer failed and it looked like it was not possible. But, after the dealership called the State, there was just a little more information required to complete the transfer. So, have your car dealer call the State so you can get yours transferred. Don't give up if you really want to keep your original "Joanna Tag"!

Millions more of the dollars that Georgians pay to get special car tags will go to the sponsoring charity or agency, under a bill dusted off by state Rep. Willie Talton, R-Warner Robins, and passed through committee on Wednesday.

Thanks to those in our neighborhood (Landings) who have helped support Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by displaying a gold ribbon. Thanks Trevor, Corey and Kim for making this happen!

Thanks to the other groups and individuals who have held fundraisers to benefit our foundation.

Great news! Looks like our voice was heard. Thanks to Rep. Willie Talton, House Bill 180 has been written to change the percent of the proceeds nonprofits receive from specialty tags.

The JMCCF is not a political organization but we hope to have some politics-related news soon that could benefit all Georgia nonprofits that have specialty license plates.

I'll give you a hint - the State of Georgia should not receive 150% more of the proceeds from the sale of Joanna Tags than the Foundation. After all... we did all of the work except for the work associated with writing/approving a House Bill.

Pile on if you agree!

We are so happy to announce that JMCCF awarded $60,000 in year-end research grants. Dr. Frederic Barr at the National Cancer Institute and Dr. Ranjit Bindra at Yale University were awarded grants based on their proposals to continue research into Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma, the cancer that took our precious Joanna. What is so exciting is that several of the researchers that we have funded in the past are now collaborating and working together toward a common cause. Makes you think... what if...

JMCCF recently received grant applications from very deserving childhood cancer research institutions. Will make announcement before the end of the year identifying which research projects JMCCF will fund.

As Childhood Cancer Awareness Month approaches please remember Kody Lucas, one of our Middle Georgia Heroes. Kody had a dream of making a difference and one of his final wishes was to film a Public Service Announcement. Through the support of Bright Blue Sky Productions, Joey Stuckey and Tyler Bryant, we were able to complete this about a month before he passed away. Please share this link with everyone you know, especially those in the media circles. It would be great to get as much airtime as possible during the month of September. Enjoy.
