We fought for our farmers, and I am grateful the Florida Legislature passed a state budget that provides $425 million, the largest amount in state history, to save Florida’s working farms and ranches from development through the Rural and Family Lands Protection Program. Since its inception, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Rural and Family Lands Protection Program has permanently preserved over 234,000 acres of working agricultural land from development, with over 168,000 acres preserved during Commissioner Simpson’s administration.

Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons:

“Florida law enforcement has a proven partner in Wilton Simpson. I am proud to endorse Wilton Simpson for Agriculture Commissioner because his record of delivering the resources we need and standing firm on the rule of law, paired with his relentless drive, will keep our rural areas secure and maintain the quality of life Floridians deserve.”

National Geographic: “Florida made conservation history by enacting a bill and securing $400 million in funding to help protect the state’s vast network of natural areas.”

DID YOU KNOW?
I was proud to champion the Florida Wildlife Corridor Act, which ensures Florida maintains critical wildlife habitats and that we protect the headwaters of major watersheds, including the Everglades and the St. Johns River. These efforts are critical to water management and the prescribed burns that are essential for land management and restoration. Preserving and protecting these land and water resources is not only vital to wildlife but critical to our groundwater recharge that provides drinking water to Florida communities.

The state budget passed this week includes $38 Million for Farmers Feeding Florida, which is now a permanent resource thanks to this year’s Farm Bill. That’s $76 million over two years connecting Florida farmers to families in need of fresh food. This is a collaboration between farmers, cooperatives, processors, food banks, and state leadership to make sure good, wholesome food does not go to waste. When school is out, dairy farmers are often left with significant surplus, while many children do not have access to meals at school. This year, through Farmers Feeding Florida, that surplus was recovered and redirected into communities rather than wasted. That’s just one example. In its first year, Farmers Feeding Florida has recovered over 43 million pounds of food to help support our neighbors in need. The diversity of recovered food reflects the strength of Florida agriculture.

Florida farmers faced a difficult year marked by freezes, wildfires, and other serious challenges.

In response, the Florida Legislature and Governor DeSantis delivered a budget that makes 2026 The Year of the Farmer.

In the days ahead, we look forward to sharing, as Paul Harvey would say, “the rest of the story” on what this budget means for Florida farmers.

Today, we simply say thank you.

I'm proud of the work I've done to help make Florida the envy of the nation. Hard working folks in the real world understand what it takes to preserve Florida's greatest natural resources while supporting the men and women who put food on our tables three times a day.
