Statement from Senator Shirley K. Turner on the Locust Street Shooting
My heart is with the families who are grieving the loss of their loved ones, with those who were injured, and with every Trenton resident shaken by this terrible act of violence. There comes a point when condolences alone are not enough. Our city needs peace, our neighborhoods need healing, and our families deserve to feel safe where they live.
Trenton cannot and should not be expected to confront violence of this magnitude alone. I am grateful that the New Jersey State Police, Mercer County law enforcement, Trenton Police Department, and neighboring communities have joined Trenton in responding to this tragedy. That same spirit of coordination must continue beyond the immediate investigation. City, county, and state government must work together to make sure that Trenton has the law-enforcement support, community resources, violence-prevention efforts, and other tools necessary to address both the immediate danger and the conditions that allow violence to take root.
Peace cannot be something we simply ask Trenton residents to hope for; it must be something all of us help build and protect. At the state level, I will continue to support efforts that bring the resources and partnerships our capital city needs. In the days ahead, I pray that we come together not only to mourn those we have lost, but to begin the deeper work of healing our streets, strengthening our communities, and preventing another family from having to experience this kind of pain.
