I had an exciting time yesterday at the Mercer Street Friends Community Schools event at Cadwalader Elementary School in Trenton, where I joined students for reading time and shared the classic story “The Little Engine That Could.” Since March is Read Across America Month, it was especially meaningful to spend time reading with these wonderful students.

This is a special book for me. I read it to my children when they were young, and they read it to their own children. The message of the story is simple but powerful. When we believe in ourselves and support one another, we can overcome challenges and achieve great things.

That same spirit is at the heart of community schools, which help connect students and families with the resources they need to succeed. I was proud to help secure $2 million to expand community schools so that more students and families in our community can benefit from these important services.

Thank you to Bernie Flynn, CEO of Mercer Street Friends, and all of the educators, partners, and volunteers who are helping strengthen our schools and support families throughout our community.

The coldest day of the winter so far, but nothing but warmth and optimism at New Jersey PAC in Newark for the swearing in of The Honorable Mikie Sherrill, the first Democratic woman elected as Governor in New Jersey. It was an honor to be there as our state begins a new chapter. Wishing Governor Sherrill every success as she takes on this responsibility, and looking forward to working together for the people of our state.

I celebrated Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Day of Service yesterday doing what Dr. King called us all to do: serve the less fortunate. The Dr. King holiday should not be a day off; it should be a day on, continuing his legacy of giving back to others.

My day started at the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen serving with the volunteers, and where Governor Mikie Sherrill joined us to thank those who show up and give back. From there, I went to Samaritan Baptist Church in Trenton for their annual Dr. King breakfast, a tradition that reminds us that faith, service, and justice are deeply connected. I also want to wish Bishop Ravenell a very happy 86th birthday.

Dr. King taught us that everybody can be great because everybody can serve. Yesterday was a powerful reminder that his legacy lives on through acts of compassion, community, commitment and kindness to one another.

I was honored to be re-elected as the Senate President Pro Tempore yesterday at the reorganization of the New Jersey Senate and the start of the 222nd legislative session. Standing there with my children by my side made this moment especially meaningful. Their love and support have carried me through every chapter of my public service, and I am deeply grateful for them.

It is my privilege to continue serving the people of New Jersey in this role. I am proud to have served in this leadership position for ten years during my career in the Senate. I remain committed to serving my constituents and working with my colleagues to move our state forward with integrity, compassion, and accountability.

🥳 Congratulations to my friend Penny Bowen-Lewis on making history as the first African-American woman to serve as President of the New Jersey Association of County Tax Boards. This is a well-deserved honor and a proud moment for our state, and especially for Mercer County, where she has served on the Mercer County Tax Board for the past ten years.

Penny is a dedicated public servant, a thoughtful leader, and someone who brings integrity and fairness to everything she does. She has earned the respect of her colleagues through years of hard work and service. Most of all, she is good people, and I could not be happier to see her recognized in this role.

Congratulations, Penny!

I am proud to be honored by CONTACT of Mercer County with the Special Community Leadership Award during their 50th anniversary celebration. This organization has been a lifeline for individuals and families who needed someone to listen, someone to care, and someone to guide them through difficult moments.

As our community faces a growing demand for mental health services, organizations like CONTACT are more important than ever. We need stronger investment in mental health funding along with more volunteers, counselors, psychologists, and psychiatrists. The need has grown, and so must our collective commitment to support the people and programs that provide hope, comfort, and connection.

Congratulations to CONTACT on 50 years of compassionate service. Thank you to the volunteers, staff, supporters, and board members whose dedication has sustained this work and changed countless lives. It was an inspiring evening, and I am grateful to celebrate this milestone with such an extraordinary organization.

What an exciting day for Lawrence Township, all of Mercer County, and the State of New Jersey! Jeanette Capritti, a 7th grade English language arts teacher at Lawrence Middle School, was surprised at a school assembly with the national Milken Educator Award and a $25,000 prize! 🏆 🥳

She is the only New Jersey teacher to receive this honor this year, and just the 39th since our state joined the Milken program in 2002. We are so proud to have a teacher of her caliber helping to shape the future for our children and our communities.

Congratulations to Ms. Capritti on this incredible and well-deserved honor!
