Trenton Spring Update 2026
Construction season is officially underway. Following a difficult winter that resulted in over 60 water main breaks, concrete replacement is occurring in numerous areas across the city. Residents can expect ongoing sidewalk repairs, road work, and asphalt replacement projects throughout the community now through late fall. We continue to use the results of the citywide PASER study to prioritize these projects.
Construction of the new Police and Fire Stations continues to progress steadily. We have had ceremonial groundbreakings for each building, and both facilities are currently on track for substantial completion by mid-2027.
The Veteran’s Library is undergoing exterior improvements, including a redesigned front façade that is expected to be completed soon. Inside, new flooring has been installed, giving the space a refreshed and updated feel.
At the corner of West Road and Westfield, in front of the library, concrete repairs and paver restoration are in progress. This joint project with the local VFW post will also include the installation of memorial statues honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. We expect this to be ready ahead of the annual Memorial Day parade and ceremony on Saturday, May 23rd.
The city’s solar initiative is moving forward as planned, with substantial completion anticipated in October 2026. Solar installations will be added to the Westfield Center, the library, the wastewater treatment plant, and the Kennedy Recreation Center. This investment is expected to generate substantial long-term savings by reducing municipal energy costs.
Renovations at the Westfield Center are approximately 90% complete, with final touches scheduled to be finished by June 30, 2026.
Modernization efforts at the Department of Public Works (DPW) facilities are also progressing well. New roofing and structural improvements are underway, and replacement of original 1950s-era windows is planned for this summer, along with additional interior upgrades. Substantial completion is anticipated by late 2026.
Work at Rotary Park continues to move forward. Installation of pilings and construction of the boardwalk are expected to take place over the coming weeks, bringing the project closer to completion.
Regarding the West Road Bridge, this is a Wayne County-owned roadway and structure. While some funding has been secured, the county is still working to finalize the full project funding. At this time, there is no confirmed start date for demolition and reconstruction. Once underway, the project is expected to take a minimum of two years to complete. Lane closures will remain in place until the project is started.
Lastly, the Fort Street grade separation project is a Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) initiative. Although funding has been secured, construction is not anticipated to begin until 2029, with completion projected for 2031.
West Jefferson is on tap to be resurfaced in 2026; this is also a county road and will be completed on their timetable.
