Today, we celebrate Juneteenth — a day that reminds us that freedom is one of our nation’s most cherished ideals, but also one that has often required extraordinary sacrifice to achieve.

From the countless men, women, and children who endured slavery, to the abolitionists who challenged injustice, to the soldiers who fought to preserve the Union, the story of Juneteenth is a story of perseverance, courage, and hope. Even after emancipation was declared, freedom did not arrive equally or immediately for all.

Juneteenth marks the day when the last enslaved Americans in Texas finally learned they were free — a powerful reminder that justice delayed is justice denied.

As we reflect on this history, we honor those who struggled, sacrificed, and persevered so future generations could enjoy greater liberty and opportunity. Their legacy challenges us to continue building communities where dignity, equality, and respect are afforded to every person.

Here in Trenton, a city shaped by the contributions of people from every background, we celebrate Juneteenth not only as a commemoration of the past, but as a call to continue striving toward a more perfect union.

May we never take freedom for granted, and may we always remember those who paid the price to secure it.

Happy Juneteenth, Trenton. ❤️🖤💚
— Mayor Reed Gusciora

Staying connected helps protect the health and well-being of older adults and individuals living alone, especially those with serious health conditions. Last week, Mayor Gusciora joined students at Gregory Elementary School for Senator Shirley Turner’s annual book fair. For over a decade, this event has encouraged students to continue their reading & gifted them hundreds of free books to add to their at-home collections.
With summer approaching, it’s especially important for our kids to keep reading. Many thanks to Senator Turner for empowering our students to do just that. And a special shoutout to the Mayor’s spectacular hosts, Ms. Russell and her First Grade class!
