The New Jersey Department of Education has awarded $7.5 million to 55 school districts and charter schools to expand high‑impact tutoring programs in English language arts and mathematics.

These grants support frequent, individual or small group tutoring aligned to classroom instruction—one of the most effective strategies for accelerating student learning. Schools will use the funding to provide tutoring during the school day, after school, and through summer programs, all while tracking student progress to ensure strong outcomes.

Commissioner Laux, local dignitaries, and NJDOE staff spent the day with Cherry Hill Public Schools, visiting Carusi Middle School, Joyce Kilmer Elementary/Preschool, and Cherry Hill High School West.

At Carusi, the group toured areas undergoing construction as part of the 2022 bond referendum, visited a classroom for students with multiple disabilities, and met middle school student leaders.

At Kilmer, they explored the new preschool expansion supported by a New Jersey ROD grant, visited the new playground, and spent time in preschool classrooms.

At West, student leaders shared reflections on their school experiences, the team visited classrooms, and they explored Shop West—an in‑house work‑based learning program supporting students in special education.

A special thank you to the three Cherry Hill High School West student leaders who guided the tour and proudly shared their schools and experiences with the Commissioner.

Every student deserves a clear path to success. Please join us in celebrating the New Jersey school districts and charter schools honored with the 2025–2026 NJDOE Lighthouse Awards for their outstanding commitment to educational equity. These cohorts are being recognized for closing opportunity gaps and creating measurable progress in three critical areas:

Increasing Equity in Dual Enrollment (Programs allowing high school students to earn transferable college credits)

• Paterson Charter School for Science and Technology

• Penns Grove-Carneys Point Regional School District

• Saddle Brook Public Schools

Increasing Equity in AP and IB Course Enrollment (Expanding access to advanced college-level programs)

• Emerson Public Schools

• Hamilton Township School District

• Lower Cape May Regional School District

• South Hunterdon Regional School District

• Salem City School District

Diversifying the Teacher Workforce (Recruiting and retaining qualified educators who reflect the diversity of our classrooms)

• Vineland Public Schools

By removing financial barriers and expanding access to high-level programs, these districts are ensuring that a student's zip code does not determine their academic potential. Thank you to the educators and leaders shining a light on what is possible in New Jersey education.
