N.J. Treasurer Aaron Binder discussed the Sherrill administration's proposed $60.7 billion state budget, highlighting a goal of eliminating New Jersey's structural deficit within four years. The presentation came during the N.J. Chamber's April 21 Business Roundtable in East Windsor. "We came into this (budget) process with an unsustainable structural deficit that required significant cuts and that is exactly what this budget does," Binder said. The proposal includes $2 billion in spending reductions, which would lower the structural deficit to $1.6 billion from $3 billion, he said. The fiscal year beginning in July is projected to grow 2.7%, while major cost drivers – including Medicaid, school aid, transit funding, property tax relief and a full pension payment – continue to pressure spending, he said.
