Bold Reuse is shifting the norm from single-use to reusable foodware. Thanks to grants from the MARC Solid Waste Management District, Bold Reuse provides reusable foodware to Arrowhead Stadium as well as festivals and events across Missouri’s Cass, Jackson, Clay, Platte, and Ray counties. These efforts are resulting in the reduction of thousands of pounds of waste going to the landfill.

When food waste is buried in a landfill, it is packed under layers of other waste with very little access to oxygen. In that low-oxygen environment, the bacteria that break the material down produce methane as a byproduct.

Methane is estimated to trap over twenty-five times more heat in the atmosphere than the same quantity of carbon dioxide over a hundred-year period, which makes landfill methane emissions a meaningful contributor to overall greenhouse gas output in many countries.

The same food scraps placed in a compost bin break down through an aerobic process instead, meaning the bacteria involved have access to oxygen throughout decomposition. This process produces mostly carbon dioxide and water v***r rather than methane, and it ends with usable, nutrient-rich compost instead of buried waste.

Home composting systems, whether a simple pile, a tumbler, or a worm bin, all rely on the same basic principle of keeping the material aerated. Turning the pile periodically is often enough to shift decomposition toward the aerobic process and away from the methane-producing anaerobic one.
