Celebrating a Legacy of Literacy, Kindness, and Service

Today, we celebrate the retirement of a truly special member of our school family, Martha Ann Patterson, after more than 25 years of dedicated service to our students, staff, and community.

As our reading interventionist, she has helped countless children discover the joy of reading and gain the confidence that comes from becoming successful readers. Her passion for literacy has changed lives, but those who know her best understand that her impact extends far beyond the pages of a book.

She has a heart for children, a passion for celebrating others, and a gift for building meaningful relationships. She has made it her mission to ensure that others feel seen, valued, and appreciated. Whether supporting a struggling reader, encouraging a colleague, or volunteering to take on a new task, her answer was always the same: "Yes, how can I help?"

Her kindness, generosity, and unwavering support have helped shape the culture of our school for more than two decades. While we will miss seeing her in the hallways each day, the legacy she leaves behind will continue to inspire us for years to come.

Please join us in congratulating Martha Ann on her retirement and thanking her for the countless lives she has touched.

Congratulations, and thank you!

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Catherine Alligood who selflessly served the Trent Woods community for the last 10 years. We are so thankful for her dedication and commitment and wish her well as she enters an era of well deserved retirement.

Craven County Schools is proud to announce that Dr. Alexis McKeel will serve as the new Principal of A.H. Bangert Elementary School, effective July 1, 2026.

Dr. McKeel brings a strong background in both classroom instruction and school leadership. She began her career teaching 8th-grade math, Math 1, and 8th-grade English Language Arts before serving as an Assistant Principal in both Beaufort and Onslow counties.

She holds a Bachelor of Science and Master’s degree in Middle Grades Education from East Carolina University, a Doctorate in School Administration and Supervision from Liberty University, and most recently earned her Education Specialist degree and Superintendent’s License from East Carolina University.

Dr. McKeel is passionate about building strong partnerships with students, families, and staff. She believes that excellence is intentional and that there is always room to grow. She is excited to connect with the A.H. Bangert community and lead a school environment where every student feels supported and empowered to succeed.

Outside of school, she enjoys playing tennis and golf, cheering on ECU football, spending time with her husband, Will who works at BSH in New Bern, and their three dogs—Macy, Levi, and Merle—and volunteering at her church.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. McKeel to A.H. Bangert—she is excited to become a Bangert Bear! 🐾❤

❤️🎶 A Farewell Filled with Gratitude 🎶🖤

We celebrate and honor Catherine Alligood as she retires after ten years of extraordinary leadership at Bangert Elementary.

For a decade, she has led our school with compassion, transparency, and an unwavering commitment to relationships. She guided us through challenges that tested our community—including a devastating hurricane and the uncertainty of COVID-19—always keeping students, staff, and families at the center of every decision.

Her impact extends far beyond the school walls, and her recognition with the Fabric of the Community in Education Award reflects the care, dedication, and leadership she has shared so generously. Her presence and influence continue to be deeply felt throughout our school family.

This goodbye parade, filled with our school song and “Thank You for Being a Friend,” is a small reflection of the gratitude and love we hold for her.

Thank you, Mrs. Alligood, for your friendship, your leadership, and the lasting legacy you leave behind. We wish you peace, joy, and many blessings in retirement. ❤️💐
