Sometimes Mom doesn't know what's coming yet...

but I do.

I notice the little changes. I alert her. And that gives her time to sit down, get somewhere safe, and prepare before a seizure happens.

People may see the emergency.

My job can start before they ever see it.

That little bit of warning can make a really big difference.

Here's something humans sometimes forget about us working dogs...

We can do everything right and still not be the right partner for someone.

A service dog might know all their tasks, behave beautifully in public, and have years of training behind them but a working partnership needs more than training.

We have to fit each other.

Our personalities matter.
Our working styles matter.
Our handler's needs matter.
Our needs matter too.

And sometimes things change.

If a handler realizes a partnership isn't working, choosing another path doesn't automatically mean somebody failed.

Sometimes it's actually one of the hardest, most responsible decisions a handler can make.

Because the goal shouldn't be forcing a partnership to work at any cost.

The goal is a healthy, successful team on BOTH ends of the leash.

Can I tell you something from the dog's side of the leash?

Not every dog who starts training wants to do what I do.

And that's okay.

Some dogs don't enjoy busy public places. Some become stressed. Some develop health problems.
Some struggle with the work their handler needs.
And sometimes, as a dog grows up, their handler realizes:

This isn't the life that makes this dog happy.
That dog didn't fail.

And the handler who listened didn't fail either.

Sometimes loving us means changing the plan you had for us even when you've spent months or years hoping that plan would work.

Because our happiness matters too.

A vest doesn't determine a dog's worth.

Neither does a title.

Whether we're service dogs, therapy dogs, sport dogs, beloved pets, or professional couch warmers...we're still pretty incredible.

The goal isn't making every dog succeed at service work. The goal is making sure every dog gets to succeed at being a dog.

Sometimes my job looks pretty boring.

I might be laying quietly, watching Mom, checking in, or waiting for whatever comes next. But even when it looks like I'm doing nothing, I'm still paying attention.

Quiet work can make a BIG difference. Because when Mom needs me, I want to be ready.

Sometimes my job looks pretty boring.

No big alert. No fancy task. I'm just quietly settled beside Mom while we wait.

But being a good service dog also means knowing when to settle down, stay out of the way, and be ready if Mom needs me.

Not every working moment looks exciting but it still counts.

🦺 Behind the Vest…

People usually see Tiny when she's working…vest on, focused, watching me and ready to respond.
But this is Tiny, too.

When that vest comes off, she gets to curl up beside me, play, be silly, sleep in ridiculous positions and just be my dog.

Being a service dog is a huge part of her life, but it isn't her entire life. I think sometimes people forget that these incredible dogs still deserve time to simply be dogs to play, rest, cuddle and enjoy the people they love.

And honestly? These quiet moments with her are some of my favorites.

She takes care of me in ways most people will never see, but at the end of the day, she's also my little girl.

Behind the vest, she's still just Tiny.

I can't make Mom's disability disappear.Trust me...if I could, I would.But that's not my job.My job is to help her navig...

I can't make Mom's disability disappear.

Trust me...if I could, I would.

But that's not my job.

My job is to help her navigate life with her disability.

Sometimes that means doing one of the tasks she trained me to do. Sometimes it means helping her through an appointment. And sometimes it's simply being right beside her while she tries something that feels really hard that day.

One appointment.
One store.
One ordinary moment at a time.

Service dogs don't give our handlers independence by making their disabilities disappear.

We help give them the support to keep living their lives with them.

And if being beside Mom gives her the confidence to try one more thing?

That's exactly where I want to be.

Mom and I don't train exactly the same way every day.

Some days we can go somewhere and work on lots of things.

Other days Mom's body says, "Nope. Not today."
So we adjust.

Maybe we practice at home. Maybe we work for a shorter amount of time. Maybe I practice settling quietly beside her.

And sometimes?

We rest.

Mom needing a service dog means there are going to be days when her disability affects our training.
That doesn't erase everything we've learned or mean we're falling behind.

We're still a team.

We just work with the day we're given.

Progress doesn't require perfect days.

Just checking, Mom. 👀

Okay, everything looks good.

Wait...

Better check again.

I don't always need Mom to call my name before I look back at her.
Sometimes I just like knowing where she is and what she's doing while I keep an eye on everything else around us.

These aren't alerts.

They're just my little check ins…one of the quiet ways I stay connected to my person.

Because even when it looks like I'm watching everything else...

I never completely forget about Mom.
