Smoke alarms must be replaced every 10 years from the date of manufacture, regardless of whether they are hardwired or battery-operated.

Why 10 Years?

• Sensor degradation: Internal ionization or photoelectric sensors naturally lose sensitivity over time due to dust, humidity, and pollutants.

• Testing isn't enough: Even if the test button works and the unit makes a sound, the internal components may fail to trigger during a real fire.

How to Check the Age

• Find the date: Twist the alarm off its mounting bracket on the ceiling or wall and check the back label for the manufacture date.
• Calculate expiration: Add 10 years to that manufacture date to find your hard stop replacement date.
• Watch for warning signs: End-of-life alerts (like a single chirp every 30 to 60 seconds), yellowing/discoloration of the plastic, or frequent false alarms mean it is time for a new one.

To operate a fire extinguisher using the PASS method, remember these four simple steps:

• P — Pull the Pin: Pull the safety pin at the top of the extinguisher to break the tamper seal and unlock the handle.

• A — Aim at the Base: Point the nozzle or hose low at the base of the fire—not at the flames or smoke—to target the fuel source.

• S — Squeeze the Handle: Squeeze the top handle or lever firmly to release the pressurized extinguishing agent.

• S — Sweep Side to Side: Move the nozzle smoothly from side to side across the base of the fire until it is completely out.

Important Safety Tips

• Check the Range: Stand about 6 to 8 feet away from the fire before discharging a standard dry chemical extinguisher.

• Keep an Exit Behind You: Always position yourself with an unobstructed escape route at your back so you can safely evacuate if the fire grows.

• Know When to Evacuate: Only fight small, contained fires (about the size of a wastebasket). If the fire is spreading quickly, producing heavy smoke, or blocking your exit, evacuate immediately and call emergency services.

Use Your Charging Superpowers

Cheap charger? Don't chance it.
Use the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.

Soft surface? Hard pass.
Charge on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or bare floor.

Fully charged? Time to unplug.
Unplug your device when it is fully charged.

For tools and rides, charge outside.
Charge large items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging.

Feels hot? Stop using it.
Stop using your device if it feels very hot, starts to swell, smells strange, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds.

On a flight? Keep it in sight.
When on a plane, keep devices where you can see them while charging. Do not charge e-cigarettes or vapes on the plane. Tell a flight attendant if you notice a problem with your device.
