Treasure Island Fire Rescue

Treasure Island Fire Rescue is an “All Hazards” emergency response organization. We are an “All Hazards” emergency response organization.

Treasure Island Fire Rescue has responded to fires, emergency medical incidents, hazardous materials spills, and other emergencies since 1949. Our department is also responsible for Emergency Management during man-made and natural disasters. Treasure Island Fire Rescue is staffed by full-time firefighter/paramedics twenty-four hours a day using a rotating three-shift system. Treasure Island Fire R

escue is equipped with one Class A 2000 gpm pumper, one Class A 1500 gpm pumper/squad, a 4-wheel drive quick response rescue vehicle, a 4-wheel drive utility vehicle, a fire chief’s vehicle, a Sea-Doo watercraft with a rescue sled, a 26’ Whaler marine response vessel with a portable fire pump, and a beautifully restored 1927 American LaFrance pumper. Our department is the first in Pinellas County to provide advanced life support services. In addition to our own department staff and equipment, a county-wide automatic aid agreement provides Treasure Island with two engine companies, a ladder truck, and a District Chief from neighboring departments on all first-alarm structure fire responses. EMS calls are responded to by our on-duty personnel in an Advanced Life Support vehicle. Sunstar, the county's ambulance contractor, provides patient transportation to a medical facility if required. We are an Insurance Services Organization (ISO) Class 2 fire department.

It began when five off-duty Treasure Island firefighters walked to honor 343 brothers who never returned home after responding to the September 11, 2001, attack on the World Trade Center.

Twenty-five years later, that walk has grown into an emotional day of remembrance, and this year's 9-11 Memorial Walk is shaping up to be the largest yet.

The Memorial Walk covers 3.43 miles, symbolizing the 343 fallen firefighters. Participants will begin at the Freedom Boat Club, 12765 Kingfish Drive, and finish at the Heron Parking Lot on Sunset Beach, 7545 Bayshore Drive. The walk starts at 8:46 a.m., the moment the North Tower was struck. Community members of all ages are encouraged to participate and show support on the 9/11 anniversary. The route runs along Gulf Boulevard, with refreshments and snacks available along the way.

Free parking is available at all Sunset Beach lots and City Hall, with a free shuttle running all morning to get you to the start and back. Everyone is welcome to stick around afterward for the Post Memorial Walk gathering at Treasure Island Caddy's.

Treasure Island Fire Rescue is excited to share that Lt. Jordan Dahlstrom recently completed the National Safe Boating Council Powerboat Instructor Certification, a NASBLA-recognized train-the-trainer program.

This intensive 3-day, hands-on course focused on vessel operations and covered four key modules:
✅ Introduction to Powerboating
✅ Precision Docking and Boat Handling
✅ Open Water Boat Handling
✅ Open Water Advanced Maneuvers

Thanks to this training, Lt. Dahlstrom is now equipped to pass these critical skills on to other TIFR members, strengthening the department’s readiness on the water.

Getting them started early. 🚒

Members of Treasure Island Fire Rescue had the pleasure of meeting Luigi this afternoon. Visiting from Chicago, he took time to meet some of TIFR’s great firefighters and tour the fire trucks.

The experience made his day and will hopefully fuel his passion to become a firefighter one day.

Congratulations to Firefighter Morgan Kien on officially completing his one-year probationary period with Treasure Island Fire Rescue!

At the August 4 City Commission Meeting, Treasure Island Fire Rescue, along with the city, celebrated this major milestone with his official pinning ceremony. Morgan was surrounded by his wife, sons, and father.

Morgan has proven himself a dedicated, strong team member of TIFR. What truly sets him apart is his exceptional skill set in marine operations. Having spent most of his life in and around the waters of Pinellas County, he brings invaluable, lifelong local knowledge to the department’s water rescue capabilities.

He is also continuing to elevate his medical skills, currently in the second semester of paramedic school at St Pete College.

Putting the “Safe” in Babysitting

Today, campers from Treasure Island Summer Camp took a big step toward becoming more responsible caregivers by participating in a SafeSitter class led by Treasure Island Fire Rescue Fire Educator Mercedes Nelson-Palmer.

This program equips young children and teens with knowledge and confidence to babysit more safely and effectively. Participants learn essential child-care skills, basic first aid, rescue techniques, and other critical safety practices that help them protect the children in their care.

Adding to the fun, members of Treasure Island Fire Rescue visited the class to discuss safety topics and answer questions, giving the campers a chance to learn directly from the everyday heroes who serve their community.

Treasure Island Fire Rescue crews recently hit the training floor to master the fundamentals of large-area search using the department's new Chicago-style search rope system. From commercial buildings to expansive layouts, precision and teamwork are critical when visibility drops to zero. Training with this gear ensures we can search faster, stay oriented, and bring everyone home safely.

Why Large Area Search Matters
✅ Zero Visibility: Standard line-of-sight searches fail in massive commercial or industrial buildings filled with smoke.
✅ Crew Orientation: A standardized search rope prevents firefighters from becoming disoriented or lost in large commercial buildings and other structures.
✅ Systematic Coverage: It allows small teams to efficiently divide, grid, and sweep massive footprints without losing their lifeline back to the exit.

Always remember, never forget. Treasure Island Fire Rescue will once again honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, through its annual Memorial Walk. This year marks the 25th anniversary and is expected to be the department’s largest yet.

Each year, TIFR reflects on the 343 firefighters who died at the World Trade Center and all the victims of that day. What began with just five on-duty firefighters has grown into a citywide tradition.

This week, Treasure Island Fire Rescue was happy to welcome a family visiting from Germany. They stopped by TIFR to explore the fire trucks and have a friendly chat with some of our firefighters. TIFR is always excited to share what we do with those interested.
