Croton Union Cemetery

Croton Union Cemetery The first burial in Croton Cemetery was Ira Ogden, the son of David and Susannah, who died in 1825.

These rather mournful words are written on the tombstone:
"Here lies the first tenant of this lonely yard
Where ne'er before a mourner's voice was heard,
Come friends and neighbors, this his peaceful home,
A few more days and hither you must come." In reality, Croton Union Cemetery is a peaceful & beautiful place, about 6 acres in size, well-loved by the community and well-maintained by a caring board of trustees.

At the end of last year's season, we went through and did a light cleaning on what we thought were old footstones at Croton Union Cemetery. Upon checking on last year's work though, we were surprised to see that two of those stones were headstones! One being the Croton Union's first recorded burial that was lost for some time! Ira McCall Ogden, son of David Ogden Jr. and Sarah 'Sally' Ogden!

The other stone will at least need another spray and time- and we are hoping to discover whose stone that is as well!

I was pleased to hand an Award of Merit to Jules Cunningham and Kyle Brown at the recent Delaware County Historical Association annual meeting/luncheon in recognition and appreciation for their dedication in cleaning so very many gravestones at Croton Union.
