Little victories 💫

Alex Franklin, a former shelter guest and current volunteer, is grateful for the positive changes in his life.

Alex, 37, stayed at Safe Harbor on and off for a couple of years before finding permanent housing last December through his employer Molon Asphalt. He's thankful for the assistance he received while staying at the shelter: “Everyone was very welcoming. I have a lot of respect for them. Once I had been there for awhile and got to know the staff, we developed a special bond.”

He now plays a leadership role in a Traverse City Police Department outreach program that helps people living with addiction, homelessness and mental health issues. He also was recently asked by his probation officer to share his story as part of a panel taking place during crisis intervention training.

Read more about Alex's journey in our most recent newsletter. His story is featured in a new column highlighting shelter guests' small breakthroughs and how these mark the beginning of lasting change. Thank you for sharing your story with us, Alex, and thank you for all that you do for our community!

Last Thursday, we celebrated the coordinators from local churches and the community who provided dinners every evening throughout our October - April season. Thanks to the sponsors who provided the food--Oryana, Meijer, Costco, Higher Grounds, and Bay Bread--and to the remarkable volunteers who make up the Steering Committee.

And a special shout out to Becky Lanham who provided delicious homemade cheesecakes and to The Flower Station for the lovely table bouquets.

🎶 What a performance!

We recently welcomed special visitors to the shelter — the Kalamazoo College Choir — and what a show these talented singers and musicians gave us! They delighted Safe Harbor guests and staff with a dinnertime concert that was truly remarkable and incredibly meaningful.

Heartfelt thanks to members of the Kalamazoo College Choir for a beautiful evening of music. We'll be cherishing this experience for a long time to come!

We appreciate St. Philip Neri's efforts in serving dinner this past weekend. It signaled the start of our summer season, and what better way to begin it than with some mouthwatering grilled hot dogs.

We appreciate your commitment to Safe Harbor ❤️

A sincere thank you is extended to UUCGT for providing dinner during the final week of our regular season, which concluded on May 1st, marking the start of our summer season. UUCGT engages with various groups to provide assistance during their designated week, including the GT Humanist, who prepared a remarkable Mexican lasagna.
UUCGT has made a commitment to provide dinners and volunteers on the first and last weeks of our regular season. We appreciate your continued support of Safe Harbor year after year.

Thanks to a dedicated group of high school students at The Greenspire School, the shelter is cleaner and tidier!

Once a month, about 8-10 students visit Safe Harbor for a few hours to help deep clean our sleeping area and kitchen, do yard work, wash windows, mop floors and more. (We also enjoy snacks together! 😁)

We can't thank them enough — their hard work makes a big impact! Thank you, Greenspire students!

Last week was a joint effort with Sacred Heart and Christ the King, who brought great food, positive energy and some cute table gnomes. On Wednesday night, Christ the King-Knights of Columbus served a tasty chicken alfredo dinner. Thank you all for a fantastic week as we wind down from our regular season.

Three of our guests decided this week to spend time outdoors together conducting an impromptu neighborhood clean-up. ♻️☀️

Not far from the shelter and along the Boardman/Ottaway River, they picked up any debris and trash they could find.

We appreciate their assistance in helping keep our Safe Harbor neighborhood and community clean!
