The House and Senate introduced the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act which will impact voters who change their names (most notably, married women), voters of color, and younger voters with these new requirements.
Americans do not need MORE obstacles to vote. The SAVE Act would create one more barrier to the voting process, as many eligible voters do not have easy access to the necessary documents.

The House and Senate introduced the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act which will impact voters who change their names (most notably, married women), voters of color, and younger voters with these new requirements.
The bill requires having a birth certificate that matches the person registering to vote. However, as many as 69 million married women in the United States have changed their legal name since getting married, meaning their name does not match their birth certificate, per the Center for American Progress.
The SAVE Act was introduced under the guise of stopping illegal voting, but it is already illegal for noncitizens to register and vote in federal or state elections. The bill would functionally eliminate mail registration by requiring voters registering by mail to produce citizenship documents “in person” to an election official before the registration deadline. It would also abolish many or all voter registration drives and online voter registration systems, which are typically treated like mail registration.
