Notification of Water Main Break and BOIL WATER ADVISORY:
Garfield Road between Carriage Hill and Manitou Drive
Traverse City, MI May 21st, 2026: The Department of Public Works (DPW) is reporting a water main break that occurred on May 21st, 2026. The break was discovered at approximately 2:00pm on South Garfield Road after the DPW initiated an investigation into low pressure in the area. Further investigation identified water seepage and sinkhole that developed in the north bound lanes of South Garfield Rd. Initial assessment indicates a water main break, leading to the leak and subsequent pavement failure.
The DPW Director credits DPW staff, the Grand Traverse County Road Commission, Grand Traverse County Sherrif’s Department, Team Elmers, and Gourdie-Fraser Inc, for their quick response and mobilization. The responding organizations secured the site and facilitated closure of the road prior to pavement failing and presenting a danger to the public. At the time of this press release, the DPW is actively working with Team Elmers to implement a repair of the water main and road as quickly as possible. Further information will be communicated regarding restoration of water service and full repair and reopening of Garfield Rd.
The DPW has received reports of low/no water pressure in the Traditions and Birmley Estates neighborhoods. A BOIL WATER ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR THESE NEIGHBORHOODS as indicated in red in the attachment. Residents in this area should not drink the water without boiling it first. Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and preparing food. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. Continue using boiled or bottled water until further notice.
The GTC Department of Public Works and contractors are working to complete repairs, and water staff will be taking other remedial actions, such as flushing and collecting bacteriological samples from around the system. The samples will be collected to determine that the water quality meets the state drinking water standards. We will inform you when tests show no bacteria, and you no longer need to boil your water. We anticipate resolving the problem within 48 hours.
This boil water notice shall remain in effect until results from the sampling verify the water is safe to drink. Customers will be advised when the boil water advisory has been lifted.
