Grand Traverse County Animal Control

Grand Traverse County Animal Control This page is dedicated to helping lost dogs found by GTCAC Officers reconnect with their owners and to help dogs find loving homes through adoption.

The Grand Traverse County Health Department's (GTCHD) Animal Control Division offers our community services such as dog adoptions, reuniting dogs with their owners, animal welfare checks, kennel inspections, picking up stray dogs, and dog licensing. Our officers also collaborate with area rescues, fosters, and the Cherryland Humane Society to find dogs their forever home.

On Friday 9/25/26 goodies and treats were dropped off to the Animal Control office. Unfortunately, officers on duty were out in the field when the items were delivered so we weren't able to thank the individuals who did this in person.

We just want to extend a thank you and appreciation to the individual(s) who dropped off this gift, and organizations listed.

Thank you,

GTCAC staff.

🐾 MEET TERRA! 🐾

Terra is a short, stocky little powerhouse weighing in at maybe 40 pounds of pure personality, and is approximately 2-3 years old ❤️

What is she? Who knows! She’s a sturdy little mixed-breed girl with the softest coat, the cutest little wrinkles, and a big ol’ sniffer that she loves putting to work. Whatever went into making Terra, the result is pretty darn cute.

And then there’s her tail… it’s about as long as she is, and GIRL KNOWS HOW TO MOVE IT. 😂 That thing has a personality of its own!

Terra firmly believes any available lap belongs to her. She loves exploring outside and following her nose, but overall she’s a pretty low-energy girl. She’ll play with toys, happily hang out with her people, and b***y scratches are definitely the way to her heart.

She’s soft, wrinkly, short, sturdy, snuggly, curious, built like a tiny tank, equipped with an unnecessarily long tail, and completely convinced she’s the perfect lap-sized dog. ❤️

Terra is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on her vaccines and ready to find her forever home! 🏡🐾

If Terra sounds like your kind of girl, come meet her!

☀️ SUNSHINE UPDATE ☀️

Sunshine will be spending a few days at our trainer’s facility for an evaluation. This will help us better understand her needs and what type of family and home environment will be the best fit for her.

Our trainer will also be helping us make the final decision on the best placement for Sunshine. ❤️🐾

We want to make sure we set this sweet girl—and her future family—up for success. Stay tuned for another update!

☀️ SUNSHINE NEEDS SOMEONE SPECIAL ☀️

Sunshine is only 9 months old, but right now, the world is a very scary place for her.

She is extremely timid around people, and the shelter environment is overwhelming for her. What Sunshine needs most is something we simply can’t give her enough of here — time, patience, consistency, and someone willing to show her what it feels like to be safe and loved.

Sunshine won’t run up and greet you with kisses. She may be scared of you at first. Trust will have to be earned slowly, on her timeline. But she does begin to warm up when given time… and we’ve discovered that hot dogs are definitely the way to her heart. ❤️🌭

We are looking for a very committed foster or foster-to-adopt home for Sunshine. Her placement would initially be foster-to-adopt while she becomes comfortable enough with her person to safely visit the veterinarian for her remaining vaccines and microchip.

Because Sunshine is so timid, we would prefer an adult-only home where things can remain calm and predictable while she learns that people can be kind.

Please understand: Sunshine is not looking for someone who expects an instant connection. She needs someone willing to sit quietly with her, celebrate the tiniest victories, give her space when she needs it, and patiently help her blossom into the dog we know is hiding underneath all that fear.

If you truly have the time, patience, love, and commitment to help change Sunshine’s life, we would love for you to come meet her. 🌻

Sometimes the dogs who make you work the hardest for their trust are the ones who make it mean the most. ❤️

Please share — Sunshine’s person may be out there waiting to find her.

❄️ WINTER IS READY FOR HER FOREVER HOME! ❄️

Winter came to us after her owners turned her loose near a busy highway. When she arrived, she was scared, shut down and didn’t trust anyone.

After giving her time to decompress, one of our officers started spending every morning with her—sitting quietly, sharing breakfast and slowly earning her trust. 🥹 Eventually, breakfast moved outside to the play yard, then came playing ball, meeting new people and learning that people could be safe.

Fast forward a few weeks and Winter has completely blossomed. ❤️ The scared little dog we first met is now a goofy, ball-loving social butterfly who loves spending time with her people. 🎾🐾

Winter seems to do well with other dogs with proper introductions and would likely do best with older, mature kids, as younger children can sometimes be a little too fast and loud for her comfort.

✨ Winter is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccines and heartworm negative.

She’s done the hard part—she learned to trust again. Now she just needs someone to choose her. 🥹🏡❤️

🐾💕 MEET IZZY! 💕🐾

Izzy may look like your typical husky… but don’t let the looks fool you! This pint-sized girl is way sweeter than your average husky shenanigans would suggest. 😂❤️

At approximately 3–4 years old and 42 pounds, Izzy is an absolute sweetheart who loves everyone she meets. She does well with other dogs with proper introductions and is always happy to soak up all the love and attention.

She did keep one classic husky trait though… the singing. 🎤🐺 Every once in a while Izzy likes to belt out a tune, and let me tell you… Taylor Swift better watch her back! 😂🎶

✨ Spayed
✨ Heartworm negative
✨ Up to date on vaccines
✨ Microchipped
✨ Good with other dogs with proper introductions

If you love the husky look but aren’t sure you’re ready for the full-blown husky chaos, Izzy might just be your girl! 🥹❤️

📞 To set up a meet & greet with Izzy, give us a call at 231-995-6080!

Let’s get this sweet little superstar the forever home she deserves! 🏡❤️🐾
