Big news for conservation and outdoor recreation!
The City of Traverse City has officially closed on the acquisition of 528 acres adjacent to the Brown Bridge Quiet Area, expanding the protected public land area to more than 1,800 acres.
Made possible through voter-approved Brown Bridge Trust Fund dollars, a Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund grant, and a partnership with the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy, the acquisition preserves valuable natural resources while creating future opportunities for trails, recreation, and public access within the Boardman/Ottaway River corridor.
A soft opening of the expanded trail system is anticipated later this summer, with access available through existing trail connections. Visitors are reminded that there is currently no dedicated parking or access point to the new property, and roadside parking is discouraged for safety reasons.
Planning is already underway for future improvements, including a trailhead, parking area, restroom facilities, universally accessible trail, and Spring Lake viewing platform.
