Benjamin has been an incredible leader in our city, consistently providing the city commission with a clear and direct assessment of his capabilities and qualifications. I look forward to continuing to work with him in his permanent capacity to make Traverse City better for all of our residents.

Traverse City commissioners voted unanimously Monday to appoint Interim City Manager Benjamin Marentette – who’s held the city’s top staff position on a temporary basis since July – permanently to the role. The move comes after two positive performance reviews for Marentette while serving as...

I’m deeply saddened by the horrific killing of Traverse City employee, Lawerance Boyd IV. Violence like this has no place in our city and TCPD is working with regional and state partners to ensure justice is served. Please lift up Lawerance, his family and colleagues in your prayers and thoughts as we try to make sense of this senseless act.

I’m really looking forward to this new commission and all of the work we can do to make life better for everyone who lives here. Let’s get to work!

Join us in welcoming the 2025 - 2027 City Commission! 🎉

Interim City Clerk Sarah Lutz administered the oath of office on November 10th to City Commissioners Lance Boehmer, Ken Funk, and Laura Ness, and to Amy Shamroe as Mayor during the City Commission’s Organizational Meeting.

Following the ceremony, the Commission appointed Laura Ness to serve as Mayor Pro-Tem for the next two years.

The newly elected Commissioners will serve four-year terms, and the Mayor will serve a two-year term.

Once again, thank you to everyone who supported me through this campaign, I'm looking forward to the next two years and continuing the progress we've started. My team and I have made rounds through the city picking up lawn signs over the last few days. But if you still have one, please recycle it, or let us know and someone will come grab it. Thank you!

Thank you, Traverse City! I'm looking forward to leading our community for the next two years!

When I talk about understanding the struggle of making it work here, I have/am living it. That's why I'm running for mayor, so that all residents, regardless of income level have a place they can call home.

Here's my quote in the recent White Pine Press

This morning, I joined local leaders from Norte, TART Trails, Michigan Department of Transportation, Former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, Elmwood Township, and Discovery Pier to celebrate the completion of MDOT’s M22 Project. Together, we can build a city that works for all generations.

I strongly believe that we need to bring all perspectives to the table to find solutions to the housing crisis. I've been testifying and advocating in Lansing in support of HB 5140 so that municipalities can have a say in how tourism taxes are spent.

I'm running for mayor to continue to be a voice of every working person in this city. It's not just a talking point, it's reality. Here's what I told White Pine Press:

"I was born and raised in Traverse City and have always had to have two "jobs" or income sources to survive here. When I talk about understanding the struggle of making it work here, I have/am living it. For ten years, I have worked to improve Traverse City, including spearheading the first strategic plan in a generation. This is important because instead of just talking about what we think we should do or what we should prioritize, we have a road map. It stresses sustainable economic development, housing, and childcare- now we need to make sure it moves forward with actions, not just more words. I promise, as the Mayor who leads the meetings and the Commission, to hold all of us elected officials to the plan the citizens created for us.”

Mayoral, Traverse City Commission candidates address NMC student issues ahead of Nov. 4 election. We asked the candidates: What does Northwestern Michigan College mean to you, and what does it mean to Traverse City?; How will you address issues that college students are facing in Traverse City, such as the cost of living? and What message do you have for NMC students? Why should they take the time to vote for you? To read more, pick of the latest edition of the White Pine Press, the student-run newspaper at NMC, on campus or around greater Traverse City—or read it online at WhitePinePressTC.com.

This week, I spent a day at the Northwest Michigan Housing Summit with Commissioners Anderson, Shaw, and Treadwell representing Traverse City. I was also able to meet with the Transforming Neighborhoods team to discuss their findings and how they can impact city policy. We need to bring all perspectives to the table to solve our regional housing crisis.
