Congratulations to the newest grads of the Community Planning Institute! 🎉

Over the past five weeks, the spring 2026 cohort has dedicated their time to learning about The Department of Planning, Master Plan 2030, Zoning, and more. We are excited to see them take their new knowledge, skills, and connections back to their neighborhoods and continue making a meaningful impact.

📍 submission: Judy Center at Sandalwood Elementary in Essex

Words from Shannon A. "This place is special to me as I took ballet classes as a toddler in this same exact room. I had no idea that I would spend my career in education at the same school! I've been at Sandalwood for 23 years now and am currently the Community School Facilitator. Essex was, is, and will always be my home, and making it better for all its community members will always be my life's passion.

Sandalwood matters. The kids are beautiful, kind, and loving. Their zip code should NOT determine their future success. My current dream is for our neighborhood to finally get a park so that community members have a safe place in walking distance, which is in alignment with Baltimore County's Master Plan."

📍 US Post Office, Towson Branch

Did you know this Towson landmark dates back to the New Deal era? Built in 1937, the Towson Branch U.S. Post Office reflects a time when the federal government invested in public buildings that symbolized stability, service, and civic pride.

With its limestone exterior and Neo-Classical design, the building stands as a lasting example of 1930s federal architecture. Inside, you’ll find a rare treasure, a WPA-era mural illustrating the evolution of transportation. Even more special? Of the six murals Cikovsky painted for the federal government, the Towson mural is the only one in Baltimore County still preserved in its original location.

This site is more than a post office. It’s a piece of history that tells the story of art, infrastructure, and community during the Great Depression.

🥖Connection and community are what the new Complete Streets project in Historic East Towson is all about and both were experienced in abundance past Saturday during our block party! The community and county came together and broke bread in celebration of the deep fellowship that was cultivated and nurtured through the Community Connectors project.

Everyone in attendance was able to take part in breaking and sharing bread, too, thanks to a generous donation from Paris Baguette in Towson And afterward, we enjoyed some live entertainment from talented musicians from The Music Space while folks mingled, learned about Goucher College's Hallowed Ground project, played games, created art and relaxed on the brand new street furniture.
