Attention customers in the Todd Drive and Edward Road area

I received word that the service leak on 25 Todd drive has been repaired. The water operators worked tirelessly all day to ensure our customer receives the best possible results.

After the repair is made, you may experience discolored water. If you see discolored water please run COLD water in your bathtub for a few minutes to clear your line.
Please know that the discolored water should dissipate within the next 24 hours.

SERVICE LEAK REPAIR

Reminder to all customers in the area of Todd Drive and Edward Road. A service leak repair is scheduled for 8:00 A.M. on Thursday, August 13, 2026. Please refrain from using water during this time, especially hot water.

Currently properties in the surrounding areas may be experiencing little to no pressure. Properties throughout the surrounding area may also experience low pressure or discolored water. Please note that this is temporary and will be resolved once the break is repaired. We hope to have this taken care of by the afternoon.

Once water is restored you may experience a period of discolored water. These conditions are temporary and do not pose any health risk. It is advisable to run water from the outside spigot for several minutes before use in all faucets, toilets, and showers etc. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this has caused and appreciate your patience and understanding while we perform these necessary repairs.

There has been a Main Break reported this morning on Todd Drive. A dig Safe has been submitted and the repair is scheduled for 8:00 A.M. on Thursday, August 13, 2026.

Our Water Technicians have completed the flushing for a section of Timberlee Park.

Customers around these locations may experience discolored water for a short time. This does not pose any health threat however this condition is temporary and should clear up shortly. If the water has not cleared up or significantly improved in 24 hours, please call the Water Department at 978-597-2212.
If possible, it is advisable to run water from your outside spigot for several minutes before using all faucets, toilets, showers, washing machine etc.

Notice To Water Department Customers in The Area of Timberlee Park

We are currently flushing Virgo Lane and Sagittarius Lane. This may affect other areas in Timberlee Park. Please call or email us to let us know if you were affected as it helps us to implement a uni-directional flushing program.

The flushing could cause a temporary discoloration to residents water in the immediate area. This will not pose any health risk and, again if noticed, will only be temporary. If the water remains discolored after 12-24 hours please call the Water Department at 978-597-2212.

ATTENTION BACKFLOW CUSTOMERS

Operation Works will conduct semi-annual backflow testing from Wednesday, July 29, 2026, through Friday, July 31, 2026.

If your facility has a backflow device, Operation Works will contact you directly.

In Massachusetts, backflow testing is overseen by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) through its Drinking Water Program .
Legal Authority
• General Law Chapter 111, Section 160A authorizes MassDEP to regulate cross-connections and backflow prevention devices to protect public health .
• 310 CMR 22.22(13), under the Drinking Water Regulations, outlines the requirements for inspecting and testing backflow prevention devices .

The Townsend Water Dept believes we have isolated the incident causing all the discolored water. Things should be returning to normal in the next 24-48 hours. We suspect there is a main or service break somewhere near the intersection of Wallace Hill Road and Spaulding Street, but we have not yet located it. We are aware of the discolored water, but we are asking if anyone notices a significant drop in their water pressure or any water bubbling up anywhere to please call the Water Department asap at 978-597-2212.

The Townsend Water Department is aware of a problem with the distribution system currently causing discolored water in the areas around the Treatment Plant, and might be spreading throughout the town. We are researching the problem and will update once we can provide more details.

On Friday, June 26, after receiving multiple reports, our department investigated an unauthorized hydrant hookup. The equipment used for the illegal connection was removed and confiscated.

This serves as a reminder that unauthorized use of fire hydrants is prohibited under Massachusetts General Law and may result in fines of up to $1,000.

Illegal hydrant connections can pose risks to water quality, system integrity, and fire protection capabilities, which is why these violations are taken seriously.

We appreciate the public’s assistance in reporting suspicious activity involving hydrants or other water infrastructure. Community awareness plays an important role in helping protect and maintain the public water system.
