SHIFT CHANGE FIRE

Local 1567's members split between Groups 4 and 1 were dispatched at 07:26 for a reported structure fire on Oakbrook Ln. Upon Engine 1's arrival smoke was seen coming from the house and a hose line was rapidly placed into service to extinguish the fire. Simultaneously members assigned to Truck 1 commenced a search of the structure to confirm no further occupants were remaining inside and that the fire had not extended any further. While Engine 2's crew supported on scene operations and assisted in ventilation and establishing a water supply.

Members operated on scene for approximately 1 hour controlling the fire and assisting the Fire Marshal's Office with their investigation. Due to the timing of this incident being dispatched at shift change, several off going members responded on apparatus to provide much needed manpower allowing the fire to be knocked down within three minutes of Engine 1's arrival. Additionally, four off duty members were called back for city coverage as well as having Drakeville VFD provide station coverage with their engine. Local 1567's members would like to remind everyone to maintain working smoke detectors in their residence and to call the Fire Marshal's Office if they have any questions regarding installation or need help.

Local 1567 is profoundly saddened to hear of the passing of Officer Robert "Robbie" Simon. Through his 17 years of service many of Local 1567's active and retired members interacted with him on duty and he always brought an energy that made even the most trying call easier to deal with. Our thoughts are with the members of the Torrington Police Department in this terrible time.

It is with profound sadness that the Torrington Police Department announces the passing of retired Officer Robert “Robbie” Simon following a courageous battle with cancer.

Robbie joined the Torrington Police Department in September 2007 and faithfully served our community for 17 years before retiring in the fall of 2024. Throughout his career, he served in several important roles, including patrol officer, Community Policing Officer, Police Activities League Officer, and member of the Department’s Special Emergency Response Team.

Robbie was a valued and deeply respected member of our department. He was loved not only by his fellow officers, but also by the many members of the community whose lives he touched. His infectious laugh, warm smile, and unmistakable sense of humor will be greatly missed.

We extend our deepest condolences to Robbie’s family, friends, former colleagues, and all who knew and loved him during this incredibly difficult time.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been finalized. Additional information will be shared when it becomes available.

Rest in peace, Robbie. Your service, friendship, and memory will never be forgotten.

Local 1567's members assigned to Group 1 Engine 1 responded to a vehicle fire on the upper east side today. With the Torringford Station under renovation, our members are still doing everything within our power to respond in a timely and professional manner to the east side of the city. Our presence is projected to start January of 2027 between 0730 and 1730. We look forward to adding a more rapid service to the busy east side of Torrington.
