Dear TMS Families,

We are excited to welcome you and your family back to Torrington Middle School for our Welcome Back Night on Thursday, September 10th!

This evening is a great opportunity for parents and guardians to meet your child’s teachers, learn more about their classes, and experience a little bit of what a typical school day looks like for our students.

Welcome Back Night Schedule

5:30 p.m. – Optional 8th Grade Washington, D.C. Trip Informational Meeting- In the Auditorium (this is for families that did not attend the meeting in the Spring)

If you are the parent/guardian of an 8th grade student, you are invited to attend this optional informational meeting about the upcoming Outsiders and Washington, D.C. trip.

5:50 p.m. – Welcome Back Night Begins- You may enter through the Gym doors or the Main Entrance

Parents and guardians will follow their child’s Periods 1–8 schedule throughout the evening.

Each class will be 11 minutes.

There will be 5 minutes between classes to allow time to transition to the next classroom.
Families will follow the same schedule as their student throughout the evening.

Please complete the attached schedule chart with your student prior to Welcome Back Night. This will help you know which classroom to go to for each period and make it easier to follow your child’s schedule throughout the evening.

We look forward to seeing you on September 10th and welcoming you back to TMS!

Warmly,
Torrington Middle School

Dress Code Policy:

A reminder that the Torrington Public Schools Board of Education Policy 5040 details a specific Dress Code for students as well as disciplinary consequences for students who violate the student dress code. The TMS dress code is published in the student handbook and key elements are included below. Please take a moment to review the dress code with your students. Students in violation of the school dress code may receive disciplinary referrals and consequences for failure to abide by the dress code.

Notable changes to the TMS Dress Code include that students may not wear:

Pajamas or sleepwear

Clothing that is transparent, mesh, or excessively torn

Clothing that reveals undergarments or the upper thigh

Accessories that pose a safety risk to students or staff

Footwear that marks the floors or poses a safety hazard, including flip-flops, sports

sandals, and slippers.

Crop tops, tank tops, and shirts that reveal the chest, stomach, back, or shoulders

Additionally, starting in the 2025 school year, the following disciplinary consequences will be issued for Dress Code violations.

First Offense: The administrator or designee issues a warning and provides the student the opportunity to change attire. If unable to change, the student will be provided with a district-issued garment.

Second Offense: The administrator or designee contacts the parent or guardian to discuss the incident. The student is given the opportunity to change attire. If unable to change, the student will be provided with a district-issued garment.

Third Offense: The administrator or designee contacts the parent or guardian to bring the student a change of clothing. The student will receive one day of in-school suspension.

Yondr Pouches:

TMS staff will check for Yondr pouches on the first day of school. If you do not have a Yondr pouch, one will be distributed during advisory. Please use a permanent marker to write your name on the pouch.

If your pouch is lost or misplaced, you will need to purchase a replacement for $5.00 from the guidance secretary in Room 212.

To enter the school, students must show a staff member at the door that their phone is secured inside their Yondr pouch. Once your pouch has been checked, you may proceed directly to the TMS gymnasium.

Students who do not have a Yondr pouch will have their names recorded for disciplinary purposes.
