South Bay Cities Council of Governments A local government agency collaborating with our 16 South Bay cities and LA County to enhance the quality of life for the South Bay

The SBCCOG is a joint powers authority of 16 cities and the County of Los Angeles that share the goal of maximizing the quality of life and productivity of the South Bay region. Our members are Carson, El Segundo, Gardena, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Lawndale, Lomita, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Redondo Beach, Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Estates, Torrance,

and the Harbor City/San Pedro communities of the City of Los Angeles, along with the unincorporated areas of the County of Los Angeles District 2 and 4. While as cities we value what makes us unique and independent, often there are times when our combined endeavors are proven more productive.

We are excited to highlight Silver Spur Elementary's Earth Week! πŸŒŽπŸ’š From April 20-24, students participated in hands-on activities and learned about a variety of environmental topics, including pollination, solar energy and composting!

Silver Spur Elementary in the City of Rancho Palos Verdes – Government has done an incredible job connecting students with environmental opportunities, including the Southern California Regional Energy Network's (SoCalREN) Kits for Kids program. Through our partnership with SoCalREN, third- and fourth-grade students received energy-saving tools, including LED bulbs πŸ’‘, a shower timer 🚿, and a night light🌟, while learning about the benefits of energy efficiency.

Silver Spur Elementary School was one of the six schools in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District to earn grants through the Kits for Kids program by taking energy-saving actions at home.

Interested in learning more about SoCalREN's Kits for Kids Program? Visit the link below! Third- and fourth-grade teachers in our community are eligible to participate, so be sure to complete the online interest form today.

The newly formed South Bay Regional Housing Trust 🏘️ board of directors voted at it's second meeting to commit a $6 million loan toward the Cordary Avenue Apartments project in the City Of Hawthorne - Government. The commitment is the first funding allocation from the $7.9 million in Los Angeles County Affordable Housing Solutions Agency (LACAHSA) earmarked to the South Bay through LACAHSA's Production, Preservation and Ownership Program funded by Measure A. 🀝

The $75.9 million Cordary Avenue Apartments project is a new construction, 100% affordable housing development located at 14115 Cordary Avenue, proposed by Abode Communities, a non-profit developer.

"We have an opportunity to really kick off this housing trust and do exactly what we're all here to do, which is to find ways to build affordable housing in a way that local jurisdictions want," Nina Tarnay, SBRHT board member from the City of Manhattan Beach, said. "This is what they want; they've [Hawthorne] put skin in the game as well. So, I think these are the types of projects I would be happy to support."

We’re excited to welcome Sarah Cortes, our new Data Analyst, to our team. In her role, Cortes will support work related to Los Angeles County Measure A through dashboard development, program performance tracking and data-driven decision-making for the Housing and Homeless Services program. 🏠🀝

Cortes has a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Cal Poly Pomona, and a Master of International Affairs from University California San Diego. Before joining the SBCCOG, Cortes served as the impact data manager at United Way of Greater Los Angeles, where she worked to build a culture of data by strengthening the rigor of data collection, measurement and evaluation across programs aimed at creating shared prosperity in underinvested communities throughout Los Angeles.

The board of directors for the newly formed South Bay Regional Housing Trust (SBRHT) had its first meeting as a joint powers authority. It's now a separate entity from the South Bay Cities Council of Governments (SBCCOG)β€”the organization that led the early feasibility work to establish the trust. 🏑

During the meeting, it also selected as chair, City of Rolling Hills Estates Council Member Debby Stegura, and as vice chair, City of Torrance CA Government Torrance Council Member Jon Kaji.

The SBRHT is designed to help fund the development and construction of affordable housing in cities that are members of the trust.πŸ—οΈ

Watch to learn more about how the SBRHT will potentially benefit South Bay cities by leading to more affordable housing in our subregion. 🏘️ 🀝
