Heritage University Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship

Heritage University Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship The Andrew W. Mentoring embodies the core principles of the MMUF program, and The Andrew W.

Mellon Foundation sponsors the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program (MMUF) at Heritage University, an extensive cohort of scholars of color, along with others, who are committed to eradicating racial disparities in academia. MMUF aims to create an extensive cohort of qualified and gifted scholars of color who, along with others committed to eradicating racial disparities, will provide oppo

rtunities for all students to experience and learn from the perspective of diverse faculty members. Mellon Foundation recognizes the faculty/student relationship as the driving force beneath the sustainability and success of this program. Only a consistent commitment to this relationship will enable us to achieve the goals of the program -- to bring greater diversity to the academy. As mentors, faculty members have the knowledge and responsibility to demystify the formal and informal aspects of earning a doctorate. Mentors also give fellows insight into the fulfillment and rewards of a career in scholarship and teaching. In the mentoring relationship, the sharing of personal experience and the transmission of knowledge intersect in a trusting learning environment that provides opportunities for both mentor and student to stretch beyond her or his boundaries. Mellon Foundation sponsors the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program (MMUF) at Heritage University. This graduate studies preparatory program offers financial support to emerging upper-division students who are interested in pursuing academic research in the arts and sciences. The fundamental objective of MMUF is to increase the number of minority and Native American students, as well as others who demonstrate a commitment to eradicating racial disparities and who will pursue Ph.D.s in core fields in the arts and sciences. The program aims to reduce, over time, the serious underrepresentation of these groups in academia (mmuf.org). Each spring, a call for qualified applicants is issued university-wide. Any student who meets the following criteria may apply:
Sophomore standing (at least 30 credits)
GPA of 3.0 or better
Statement of intent to pursue a graduate degree (see Mellon coordinator for a handout outlining a structure for the essay)
Three strong letters of recommendation from faculty (see Mellon coordinator for a handout of content expectations)
Approximately five fellows are selected every year. Awards are for two years (contingent upon adequate levels of participation). An interdisciplinary committee of faculty members reviews student applications for admission to this program. Students receive a summer stipend to explore topics of interest (first year) and/or conduct faculty-mentored academic research (second year). Various levels of academic scholarships are awarded each fall and spring semester (amounts to be determined by levels of participation in and compliance with the MMUF Program).

The Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program at Heritage University was proud to sponsor a Community Dinner on campus this week. The event served as a celebration for both Native American Heritage Month and Spirituality Week.

The dinner was catered by the American Indigenous Business Leaders student club at Heritage. In addition to preparing the meal, students served guests "longhouse" style, bringing the food to the tables. Recipients of the Full Circle Scholarship at HU also introduced themselves and shared their academic pursuits with guests. Yakama Nation elder Davis "Yellowash" Washines and student Michael Buck provided the opening and closing prayers and song. Adjunct art instructor Gloria Garcia kept the kids busy with a fun arts and crafts project.

It was a great night for the community to come together, see old friends and make new ones, enjoy each other's company, and of course, to enjoy a wonderful meal. We thank everyone who attended!

Mellon Fellow Michael Buck is back in the Valley after spending the summer with the Center for Ethnographic Research at UC Berkeley. Michael received the scholarship to intern with the CER after being awarded a scholarship from the Joseph Meyer Indian Center. The six-week internship offered hands-on research experience and advanced training in designing and executing a project using qualitative methods.

Michael later presented his work at UC Berkeley. Congratulations Michael!

Exciting news about HU Mellon Fellows spending their summers at elite institutions!

The first is about Elena Maltos and Adriana Morfin, who earned UCLA course credits this summer through the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Writing and Research Training Program at UCLA. Adriana is in the front row with the blue hat, and Elena is in the second row on the far right.

The centerpiece of the program is an intensive scholarly writing and research methodology course for which they earned UCLA credits. They also participated in individual and group mentoring sessions, workshops, events, and a final research colloquium. Adriana and Elena also learned to write in disciplinary contexts, cultivated their interpretive skills, and experimented with new digital research tools.

This experience for Elena and Adriana is especially exceptional since only twenty current Mellon Mays Fellows from participating Mellon Mays colleges and universities across the United States were accepted. Great work Elena and Adriana, we are very proud of you!
