Earlier this month, Toppen*sh High School student Luz Resendiz had the incredible opportunity to attend the National Student Leadership Congress (NSLC) in Washington, D.C., after being selected to participate through Yakima Valley College’s TRIO program.
During the week-long experience, Luz participated in leadership classes and seminars focused on college, careers, and advocacy. Students stayed at American University, connected with TRIO students from across the country, explored museums and historic sites throughout the nation's capital, participated in community service, and even prepared and conducted a Mock Congress.
As part of the program, students also met with representatives from Washington, including Jules Sproul, Education Policy Adviser to U.S. Senator Patty Murray.
Reflecting on the experience, Luz shared, "The program NSLC went incredible! I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested in improving their leadership skills and getting their story out there for others to hear. This program made me more confident in my words and more confident to tell others where I came from and how I overcame obstacles. Overall, it was an incredible experience, and if I had the opportunity, I would do it again."
