Devonta B. Miller was sentenced today for the March 26, 2021, murder of Kristy Rodriguez.

Miller was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole for 50 years, followed by an additional 313 months of imprisonment.

District Attorney Mike Kagay commended Deputy District Attorneys Will Manly and Brandon Farnham, along with the Topeka Police Department, for their work in investigating and prosecuting this case.

Our thoughts remain with Kristy Rodriguez’s family and loved ones.

Demari D. Owens was sentenced today to life in prison with a mandatory minimum of 50 years for the 2024 murder of Ricky Washington.

“Ricky Washington lost his life because Demari Owens chose violence. A Shawnee County jury held him responsible, and today the Court imposed a sentence that ensures he will spend at least the next 50 years in prison.”

Kagay commended Deputy District Attorney Lauren Amrein and the Topeka Police Department for their work on the case.

It’s back to school time, and our office held its annual Hygiene Drive!

Thanks to the generosity of our staff, we collected more than 4,000 hygiene products to benefit the students and staff of Chase Middle School.

I’m incredibly proud to work alongside people who care so deeply about our community. Thank you to everyone who donated, volunteered, and made this effort a success.

Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay announced that his office has charged Scott T. Grahnert (18) of Topeka, with multiple s*x offenses.

The District Attorney’s Office requested and received a $1 million bond. Grahnert remains in custody at the Shawnee County Department of Corrections.

The charges are allegations of criminal conduct only. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay announced that his office has charged Wayne A. Vagts, 38, of Topeka, with multiple s*x offenses involving a minor.

The District Attorney’s Office requested and received a $1 million bond. Vagts remains in custody at the Shawnee County Department of Corrections.

The charges are allegations only. The defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Today, the Court sentenced McKay to life in prison with a mandatory minimum term of 50 years before he is eligible for parole consideration on the murder conviction. The remaining sentences were ordered to run concurrently.

District Attorney Mike Kagay said “Today’s sentence ensures that Brian McKay will be held fully accountable for the deliberate and calculated murder of Monica McKay. The evidence established that this was not a crime of impulse. It was the culmination of weeks of stalking, planning, and escalating conduct that ended in a cruel killing.”

“Justice cannot erase what happened,” Kagay continued. “But today our justice system fulfilled its responsibility by holding the defendant accountable for his crimes. Our thoughts remain with Monica’s family and friends, who have endured unimaginable loss.”

Last week, our 2026 Citizens Academy class completed its final session and graduated. Over the past ten weeks, this outstanding group dedicated their time to learning about the criminal justice system, the work of the District Attorney’s Office, and the many partnerships that help keep our community safe.

We were honored to share this time with such an engaged and thoughtful group. Their questions, perspectives, and commitment to learning made this year’s academy a tremendous success.
