🥵Did you know that extreme heat is the leading cause of weather-related deaths in the US and in Kansas?
Heat-related illnesses include heat rash, sunburn, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

☀️☀️PREVENT heat-related illness:
💧Stay hydrated. Drink fluids before you feel thirsty and check your urine – if it's dark you need to drink more fluids. Avoid dehydrating fluids like alcohol, coffee and sugary drinks.
🆒 Stay in air-conditioned spaces as much as possible.
🏃‍♂️‍➡️Pace outdoor physical activity and schedule heavy labor or exercise early morning or evening, if possible.
🍉Eat lighter meals.
👵🏽Check on the vulnerable, e.g., the elderly, the very young, the disabled and the unhoused.
🧴Prevent sunburn.
🚘Never leave anyone in cars.

⭕⭕SYMPTOMS of heat-related illness include:
😵‍💫Feeling faint and dizzy.
🥴Headache.
🤮Nausea and vomiting.
😥Heavy sweating, or no sweating.
😣Muscle cramps.

🩺🩺FIRST AID for heat exhaustion and heat stroke:
🌳Move to a cool and shaded area.
👚Remove as much clothing as possible.
💧Drink liquids if able. Don't give liquids to someone if they are confused.
🌡️Cool quickly by:
💦Bathing in cold water or ice if available.
🫗 Wetting the skin and clothing.
🧊Putting cold, wet cloths and/or ice on head, neck, armpits and groin.
🍃Circulating air.

Buckle up on every trip. Remember your shoulder belt should rest across your chest and shoulder, not behind your back or under your arm.

See a spill or illegal dumping along a Kansas highway? We want to know! We monitor highway outfalls for illicit discharges like automotive fluids and household toxins. If you spot a spill or witness illegal roadside dumping, report it to KDOT, and help us protect local waterways. 🛣️💧

PLAN AHEAD: EB I-70 and NB U.S. 77 construction in Geary Co. could impact game day travel.

CLOSED: Eastbound I-70 on-ramp at Marshall Field will close during periods of high traffic (game weekends) in an effort to improve traffic flow.

Eastbound I-70 motorists: Traffic reduced to one lane between Henry Dr (Exit 301) and K-18 (Exit 303).

Northbound U.S. 77 motorists: Lane reductions just south of I-70 with temporary traffic signals to direct traffic around bridge construction.

Be prepared for possible traffic back-ups. Motorists are advised to leave early, if possible, and allow extra time or use alternate routes. Check kandrive.gov for current road conditions and construction info.

As Labor Day weekend approaches, remind yourself that even a small amount of alcohol can affect driving ability. 🍺❌🚗

About one-third of all traffic crash fatalities in the U.S. involve drunk drivers (with BACs at or above .08 g/dL).
