The EPA Pacific Southwest (Region 9), in collaboration with the Center for Creative Land Recycling, has created the Vacant to Vibrant Land Renewal Initiative. Members of the RDSBC pursuing an EPA Brownfield Grant can take advantage of the technical writing courses and webinars they offer to learn how best to secure funding.

Did you know Aboveground Storage Tanks (ASTs) and Underground Storage Tanks (USTs) can pose serious environmental risks if not properly managed? These tanks – commonly used to store gasoline, diesel fuel, heating oil or other hazardous materials – can leak over time, contaminating soil and groundwater.

When the RDSBC plans to transform a brownfield into a site ready for development, a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment is a critical first step in identifying potential contamination from ASTs and USTs and other sources and sets the stage for safe cleanup and redevelopment.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Futures Engine in the Southwest is advancing solutions to urgent environmental challenges – water scarcity, energy security, and air quality – across Nevada, Arizona, and Utah. By fostering innovation in water, energy, and air systems, this initiative may unlock new, sustainable land reuse opportunities for future brownfield redevelopment in the RDSBC coalition area.

Congratulations to NyE Communities Coalition (NyECC) on being awarded an EPA Brownfields Job Training Program Grant! This funding will provide training in asbestos and lead abatement, mold remediation, first aid, disaster site work, and hazardous waste operations, helping young students, unemployed residents, and others gain essential job skills. Way to go NyECC!

Last in our series is the former juvenile probation office, located in Pahrump. It is anticipated to be demolished. Ongoing efforts will identify if any potential sources of contamination will need to be cleaned up prior to demolition. NyECC and RDSBC are dedicated to improving the quality of life for Nevadans.

Second in a series highlighting improvements coming to Pahrump is the former Nye County animal shelter. The site was evaluated for potential contamination to determine if a Phase II ESA is required to sample building materials, soil or groundwater before future development can begin. If indicated, a Phase II ESA will assess the presence, nature, and extent of contamination and evaluate any associated risks to human health or the environment.

Nye Communities Coalition, a member of the RDSBC, has its eye on the future of Pahrump. Redevelopment begins with Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs). This mini-series highlights three buildings slated for reuse starting with the Pahrump Finance Building (pictured here).
