City of Tonkawa, Oklahoma

City of Tonkawa, Oklahoma City Government Tonkawa (the word translates as “they all stay together”) takes its name from the Tonkawa Tribe. Buck History and Welcome Center.

Native Americans, hardy pioneers, visionary educators, legendary oilmen, German prisoners of war and creative citizens have all left their marks on this city on the Salt Fork River just east of I-35. Because of abundant wheat production in the area, Tonkawa styles itself “Wheatheart of Oklahoma.”

The town entered the “Roaring Twenties” with the discovery of oil in the Tonkawa (Three Sands) Field

in 1929. Briefly known as “The Billion Dollar Spot”, Tonkawa’s population swelled to 10,000 and several beautiful homes and churches built during this time still stand in the city. German prisoners of war were housed in a POW camp during World War II. Northern Oklahoma College, established in 1901 as University Preparatory School, is the home of the Eleanor Hayes Art Gallery, which hosts outstanding exhibits by Oklahoma artists throughout the academic year, and of the A.D.

When technology works, it’s great. Sometimes too great. The National Weather Service Rebroadcast module that syncs to our Nixle Mass Text Notification system sent out a series of repeated text alerts this morning at about 1 a.m….. THIRTEEN in fact! We were forced to deactivate the NWS rebroadcast link until we can contact our provider to make sure the mass text notifications do not send alerts every minute in the early morning hours. We plan to have this resolved and re-establish the NWS link. Although it was out of our control, we sincerely apologize for this inconvenience.

Snow, Streets, and Plows.... OH MY!

Every winter storm brings the same understandable question: “Why are the main roads clear, but my street isn’t?” We want to take a moment to explain how snow removal decisions are made and why residential streets are handled differently.

It’s not about being overlooked — it’s about access and safety.
Snowplows don’t remove snow; they relocate it. On narrower neighborhood streets, that snow gets pushed toward the curb and across driveways. Plowing every side street would often leave residents stuck behind heavy, icy piles that are far harder to clear than the snow already on the road.
In many cases, light vehicle traffic actually helps by packing snow down and keeping streets usable without creating those driveway barriers.

Emergency response comes first.
During winter weather, our crews focus on keeping the most critical routes open:
- Roads used by ambulances, fire trucks, and law enforcement.
- Streets that connect neighborhoods to major thoroughfares.

These routes are crucial in ensuring that emergency services can reach homes and businesses quickly when every second matters.

When do neighborhood streets get plowed?
If snowfall becomes deep enough that standard vehicles can no longer travel safely, residential streets move up the priority list and are addressed as conditions allow.

We know snowstorms disrupt daily life and test everyone’s patience. Please know that the City of Tonkawa crews are working with limited equipment, long hours, and one goal in mind: keeping our community safe. We appreciate your cooperation, your understanding, and your neighborly spirit during winter weather.
