John Keating, 56, volunteered as a firefighter with his father, and the experience became full circle when his son, Colin, 18, joined Silverton Volunteer Fire Company about six months ago.

“Growing up around the fire service and seeing the impact firefighters have when people need help the most really inspired me,” said John. “Years ago, I had the opportunity to volunteer with my father, and those experiences meant a lot to me. Now, being able to share that same experience with my son is really special. It feels like continuing a tradition of service and commitment to our community.”

Alexander and Joseph Roman, ages 19 and 16, are following in their dad’s footsteps as volunteer firefighters with Pleasant Plains Vol. Fire Department in the Toms River Fire Department. Daniel, 52, grew up living two blocks from the firehouse.

“I always heard the sirens going off. My grandfather and uncles were firefighters up in Monmouth County, and I always wanted to be a fireman,” he said.

Fire Department personnel and apparatus are requested to assemble at Silverton Memorial Funeral Home by 10:00 AM.

A funeral procession will depart the funeral home at approximately 11:00 AM traveling to:

St. Joseph’s Church
685 Hooper Avenue
Toms River, NJ 08753

Funeral Mass will begin at 11:30 AM.

Following Mass, the procession will continue to East Dover Fire Company for the Last Call ceremony before proceeding to:

St. Joseph’s Cemetery
62 Cedar Grove Road
Toms River, NJ 08753

Interment is scheduled for approximately 1:00 PM.

Please keep the Convery family, friends, and all those affected by this tremendous loss in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

🕊️ It is with deep sadness that the Toms River Fire District #1 Board of Fire Commissioners announces the untimely passing of Past Fire Commissioner George Convery Sr.

Commissioner Convery dedicated over 30 years of service to the Board of Fire Commissioners, where he exemplified the true meaning of commitment to the fire service. Throughout his tenure, he was a steadfast advocate for continuing progress within the district while always supporting the firefighters and the community he proudly served.

His leadership, dedication, and unwavering support helped shape the organization and leave a lasting impact on countless members and residents throughout the years.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Convery family, friends, and all those affected by this tremendous loss.

Today, the Silverton Volunteer Fire Company, East Dover Fire Company, and the Toms River Bureau of Fire Prevention continued their tradition each May by visiting the Oceans of Fun Nursery School on Fischer Blvd to speak with students about fire prevention, show off the fire trucks, and let the children have some fun spraying water.
Today was especially meaningful as Fire Inspector/Lt. Ryan LaVigne and Firefighter Sean LaVigne surprised their mother, who teaches at the nursery school, while helping educate the students on fire safety.
The LaVigne family continues a strong tradition of service to the community, carrying on a family legacy that began with their grandfather, a former Chief and Past Director of the Fire Training Center.
