Tomah Fire Department Responds to Residential Kitchen Fire

At approximately 11:48 a.m. on June 6, 2026, the Tomah Fire Department was dispatched to a residence on Green Acres Avenue for a reported stove fire. Monroe County 911 received reports of active flames coming from an oven inside the home.

The sole occupant of the residence safely evacuated prior to the arrival of emergency responders.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a fire involving the kitchen stove area. The fire had extended from the oven to portions of the surrounding cabinetry and the wall immediately behind the appliance. Crews quickly extinguished the fire and prevented it from spreading further into the residence. Fire damage was contained to the kitchen stove cabinet area, with additional smoke damage limited to the immediate vicinity. No injuries were reported.

The Tomah Fire Department would like to remind residents that cooking remains one of the leading causes of home fires. If a fire occurs in an oven, keep the oven door closed, turn off the heat source if it is safe to do so, evacuate the home, and call 911.

The Tomah Fire Department would like to thank the Tomah Police Department, Tomah Ambulance, Monroe County 911 Communications Center, and Alliant Energy for their assistance during the incident. The cooperation between responding agencies helped ensure a safe and efficient response while minimizing damage to the home.

To our Team,

I want to take a moment to recognize something important. Everyone of you is here by choice.

You have jobs, families, responsibilities, and countless other ways you could spend your time. Yet when the pager goes off, when someone is having the worst day of their life, you answer the call. That says something about your character. It says something about who you are.

Volunteer firefighters are the backbone of countless communities. We don’t show up for fame, recognition, or a paycheck. We show up because our neighbors need us. We show up because service matters. We show up because when an emergency happens, someone has to be willing to step forward. 

The work isn’t always easy. There are long nights, difficult calls, tough training, sessions, and moments that test us physically and mentally. But remember this, every skill, you practice, every drill you complete, and every hour you dedicate prepares you to make a difference when it matters most.

Success isn’t measured only by fires extinguished or emergencies resolved. It’s measured by trust. The trust our community places in us. The trust we place in each other. The confidence that when things get difficult, no one stands alone. 

Today, focus on the fundamentals. Look out for your teammates. Communicate clearly. Stay disciplined. Stay safe. and remember that every person here contributes to something bigger than themselves.

You are leaders. You are protectors. You are neighbors helping the neighbors.

Stand tall, stay sharp, and take pride in what you do. Because when the call comes, the Tomah community knows it can count on you.

Commercial Vehicle Brake Fire Safely Contained on Interstate 90

At approximately 3:53 a.m. on June 2, 2026, the Tomah Fire Department was dispatched to Interstate 90 westbound near Mile Marker 43 for a reported commercial vehicle fire.

The driver reported flames coming from the rear brake and tire area of the tractor. Recognizing the potential danger, the driver disconnected the trailer from the tractor prior to firefighters arriving on scene. The trailer compromised was not carrying hazardous materials.

Upon arrival, firefighters found fire involving the brake and wheel assembly of the tractor. Crews quickly applied water to cool the overheated components and extinguish any remaining fire. Firefighters were able to reduce temperatures to a safe level, allowing the driver to move the vehicle a short distance to a nearby truck yard where it could be safely parked and inspected.

No injuries were reported, and no hazardous materials were involved in the incident. Damage was limited to the brake and wheel area of the vehicle.

Compactor Fire Contained at Modern Disposal Systems

Tomah, Wis. – June 1, 2026

The Tomah Fire Department responded to a reported fire at Modern Disposal Systems on Townline Road during the afternoon of June 1, 2026.

At approximately 2:34 p.m., Monroe County Dispatch received a report of a compactor on fire inside the facility. Employees quickly recognized the situation and began efforts to move the affected compactor from inside the building to help prevent the fire from extending to the structure and other equipment.

Firefighters arrived on scene and worked to extinguish the fire while ensuring the blaze had not spread beyond the contents of the compactor. The fire was contained to the compactor, preventing significant damage to the facility.

No injuries were reported to employees or emergency responders.

The Tomah Fire Department would like to recognize the employees of Modern Disposal Systems for their quick actions and situational awareness, which helped minimize the impact of the incident and reduce the potential for a larger fire.

The cause of the fire is believed to be battery related. Improperly disposed batteries continue to pose a significant fire risk within the waste and recycling industry. Early Morning Porch Fire Quickly Contained by Residents and Fire Department

TOMAH, Wis. — The Tomah Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 1600 block of Kilbourn Avenue during the early morning hours of May 31, 2026.

At approximately 3:57 a.m., Monroe County Dispatch received a report of a fire involving a wooden nightstand on the front porch of a residence. The caller advised that flames had spread to portions of the porch and stairs and that the exterior of the home was beginning to catch fire. All occupants safely evacuated the residence prior to the arrival of emergency personnel.

Before firefighters arrived, residents acted quickly by utilizing a fire extinguisher and a garden hose to suppress the fire. Their prompt actions significantly slowed the spread of the fire and prevented more extensive damage to the home.

Tomah firefighters arrived on scene and completed extinguishment of the remaining fire, including hotspots located beneath the porch area. Fire crews also checked the residence for extension and ensured the fire was completely extinguished.

One cat was initially reported to still be inside the home; however, no injuries to residents, firefighters, or pets were reported.

The fire caused minor damage to the porch and exterior of the residence. The fire is believed to have originated from a portable battery jump starter (jumper pack) that was located on the porch. The incident remains under investigation, but no foul play is suspected at this time.

The Tomah Fire Department would like to commend the residents for their quick thinking and immediate use of a fire extinguisher. Their actions played a significant role in preventing the fire from spreading further into the home and causing substantially greater damage.

This incident serves as a reminder that lithium-ion battery-powered devices and portable jump starter packs should be used, charged, and stored according to manufacturer recommendations and kept away from combustible materials whenever possible.

The department also reminds residents to keep working fire extinguishers readily accessible and to call 911 immediately when a fire is discovered.

The Tomah Fire Department is excited to announce the replacement of our 1987 Chevrolet Scottsdale pickup with a brand new 2026 GMC 3500!

This project was partially funded through the Wisconsin DNR Forest Fire Protection (FFP) Grant, funds provided through the Tomah Firefighters Association, and support from the community.

The new truck will serve multiple purposes for the department, including:• Responding to wildland and brush fire incidents• Assisting with rescue operations across Tomah Rescue’s 550 square mile coverage area• Supporting standby events such as the Tomah Tractor Pull and other community events

And yes… this is officially the first brush truck ever purchased by the City of Tomah with air conditioning. We’re entering a new era of luxury in the fire service. 🚒❄️😂

The 1987 Scottsdale served the department proudly for 39 years, and if history repeats itself, this new GMC should only need to make it until about 2065. No pressure.

We appreciate the continued support from our residents, partners, and the Tomah Firefighters Association in helping us improve the equipment used to protect our community.

Please avoid the Northside of the city of Tomah, Highway 21 west of hwy 12 is shut down in both directions due to a 3 inch natural gas line that was struck, WE Energies is on scene and is estimating closure for at least an hour.
