French-Canadian Genealogical Society of Connecticut, Inc.

French-Canadian Genealogical Society of Connecticut, Inc. The FCGSC operates a genealogical research library, helps trace family roots with a focus on French- and Canada.

The purpose of the Society is to establish and maintain a genealogical research library for persons of French-Canadian ancestry; to encourage the study of Canadian and American history; to extend knowledge of accurate methods and documentation in genealogical research; and to celebrate our American heritage of multicultural diversity. We operate a genealogical library of materials relevant to peop

le of French-Canadian descent, with additional resources for persons whose ancestors settled in the New England area. The library is open four days per week, serving an average of 500 patron visits on site over 190 days or 850 hours of research time per year, as well as providing research advice by phone to distant members and offering a free online genealogical queries service to both members and non-members on our Society’s web site at www.fcgsc.org . The Society publishes and distributes to our members a biannual journal, the Connecticut Maple Leaf and a quarterly newsletter, The Maple Leaflet. These are mailed to approximately 400 members and 40 libraries, repositories, and genealogical organizations in the U.S. We also offer free public workshops and seminars at the library on research methods and various genealogical/historical topics and provide speakers on request to local organizations. Our Library is located in the Old Tolland County Courthouse at 53 Tolland Green, Tolland, Connecticut. Use of the library is free to members, and open to non-members for a $5.00 per day research fee. Library hours are Monday and Wednesday 1-5PM, Saturday 9 AM-4 PM, and Sunday 1-4 PM. Holiday closings are posted on our web site at www.fcgsc.org .

Fairfax Genealogical Society’s free virtual presentation — ‘Find Your American Ancestors Using Canadian Records’

By Gail Dever on September 12, 2024

The Fairfax Genealogical Society in Merrifield, Virginia will host the free virtual presentation, Find Your American Ancestors Using Canadian Records, delivered by Kathryn Lake Hogan, on Thursday, September 19, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time. It is open to all who register.
Even if you think they were never in Canada, discover eight reasons why your American or immigrant ancestors may have been there.

 Immigration: Did your ancestor come through a Canadian port of entry? Many immigrants to the United States went through a Canadian port and then travelled to their American destination.
 Land: Perhaps your ancestors took advantage of low-cost or free land in Canada. Discover why your American ancestor was granted land and where to find the records.
 Migration: Did your ancestor migrate through Canada before settling in the USA? Learn how to find clues that can lead you to your ancestor’s path of migration from Canada to the United States of America.
 Birth: Maybe your ancestor really was born in Canada.
 Marriage: Did your ancestor say “I do” in Canada? Learn why your ancestor may have crossed the border to be married in Canada.
 Death: Did your ancestor take his last breath on Canadian soil?
 Employment and/or Visiting: Perhaps your ancestor was one of the thousands of Americans who have crossed the border into Canada looking for employment or visiting a relative.
 War: Was your ancestor one of the thousands of American men who joined the Canadian forces during World War I or II?
Register to watch the presentation on Zoom.
