NAACP Toledo Branch Statement on Recent Toledo Police Incident
The NAACP Toledo Branch is deeply concerned by the recently released video involving a Toledo police officer’s interaction with a group of teenagers, as well as the announcement that an internal investigation is now underway.
While we recognize that the investigation must be allowed to run its course, this incident cannot be viewed in isolation. It follows a series of troubling incidents that have raised serious questions within our community about the culture, training, accountability, and treatment of residents by some members of the Toledo Police Department.
When young people are subjected to interactions that appear dismissive, disrespectful, or based on broad assumptions rather than specific conduct, it damages trust and reinforces concerns that certain communities are viewed through a lens of suspicion rather than service. Public confidence is not eroded by a single incident alone—it is weakened when similar concerns continue to emerge over time.
The NAACP Toledo Branch believes this moment requires more than an internal review of one officer’s conduct. It requires an honest examination of the organizational culture that allows these incidents to occur and continue to surface. The community deserves transparency regarding the findings of this investigation, meaningful accountability where warranted, and a clear commitment to ensuring that every resident—especially our youth—is treated with dignity, respect, and fairness.
As Toledo looks toward the future of public safety leadership, we believe this is an appropriate time to consider whether fresh perspectives and proven reform-minded leadership from outside the existing structure may be necessary to help rebuild public trust and drive meaningful cultural change. The challenges facing the department are significant, and addressing them may require a leader with a demonstrated track record of strengthening community relations, enhancing accountability, and implementing best practices from beyond our local experience.
We call upon city leaders, police leadership, and community stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue aimed at strengthening trust, improving training, and fostering a culture of policing that reflects the values of professionalism, constitutional policing, and community partnership.
Our young people deserve to feel protected, not profiled. Our community deserves a police department that earns trust through its actions. The NAACP Toledo Branch will continue to monitor this situation closely and advocate for accountability, transparency, and justice for all.
