Elmer H. Close (1872-1924) was a prominent Toledo realtor and real estate developer whose work helped shape the city’s suburban growth during a period of rapid expansion. Close developed Harvard Place, located near Walbridge Park, early in his career while working for George Pomeroy, Jr. He later collaborated with John N. Willys to develop several residential plats in West Toledo along Sylvania Avenue, contributing to the city’s transformation into a network of planned neighborhoods. His most recognized achievement is his role in developing the Village of Ottawa Hills.
Close’s influence on Toledo is still visible today, not only in the neighborhoods he helped establish but also in local landmarks, including Close Park in West Toledo, named in his honor. His legacy reflects the broader trend of early suburban planning that emphasized green space, accessibility, and community design.
He is buried in section 15.
