Yesterday, The Fair Housing Center's CEO and General Counsel George Thomas spoke before Toledo City Council about a proposed policy to strengthen protections for tenants facing landlord retaliation.

With support from Councilmembers Theresa Gadus and Dr. Brittany Jones, TFHC has worked to bring stronger protections to Toledo, building on local laws already adopted in cities including Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Columbus.

The proposal responds directly to what we heard through tenant listening sessions and surveys: many renters are afraid to request needed repairs or exercise their rights because they fear retaliation from their landlord.

This policy would be an important step toward ensuring Toledo tenants can speak up about unsafe or unhealthy housing conditions without fear of losing their homes. The proposal is expected to move to a committee hearing on September 24 at 3:30 p.m.
