At the Toledo Area Sanitary District, every piece of equipment we use is carefully tested to ensure treatments are both effective and properly calibrated. Monitoring droplet size helps us target mosquitoes efficiently while meeting strict operational standards.

It’s one of the many ways we are working behind the scenes to help protect Lucas County residents from nuisance mosquitoes and diseases like West Nile Virus.

After spending time outdoors, always take a few minutes to do a thorough tick check. Finding and removing ticks early can help reduce your risk of diseases like Lyme disease and keep you and your family safe.

Here’s how to properly check for ticks ⬇️

Remember to wear EPA-approved repellent when outdoors and dump & drain any standing water around your home to help lower mosquito populations and reduce your risk of bites.

Tiny tick. Big risk.

Nymph ticks are active right now, and because they’re only about the size of a poppy seed, they can easily go unnoticed. This stage is one of the biggest drivers of Lyme disease transmission.

Stay cautious in wooded areas, tall grass, and leaf litter—and always do a tick check after being outdoors.

Why do we test for resistance?

At the Toledo Area Sanitary District, resistance testing helps us make sure the products we use are still effective against local mosquito populations.

Over time, mosquitoes can adapt to certain control methods. By routinely testing, we can detect changes early, adjust our approach, and continue using the most effective, targeted treatments available.

It’s all about staying one step ahead so we can better protect you and your family.

Why does a mosquito bite itch?
The irritation from a mosquito bite is an allergic reaction to the saliva they inject to keep your blood from clotting.

Ticks are built to last.
They can survive weeks, months, or even a year without feeding, waiting for the right host to come along.

Mosquitoes can grow very quickly.
Certain species, like some of our Culex mosquitoes, can develop from egg to adult in just 4–7 days, depending on temperature.
