WE MADE THE FINAL FOUR!

We are incredibly excited to announce that Toledo has made the FINAL FOUR in the Iowa League of Cities People’s Choice Award!🏆

The transformation of the former Iowa Juvenile Home (IJH) campus into our amazing South Tama Middle School is a project our community can truly be proud of—and now we need YOUR help!

LET’S TALK NUMBERS…
145 — Number of years since Western College opened its doors in Toledo.
94 — Number of years the campus operated as the Iowa Juvenile Home.
7 — Number of years the Iowa Juvenile Home sat empty.
22 — Number of acres redeveloped into the middle school campus and housing.
$750,000 — Vacant State Building Grant awarded to the City of Toledo for mitigation.
$750,000 — Vacant State Building Grant awarded to South Tama for restoration.

AND THE MOST IMPORTANT NUMBER…

400+ — South Tama Middle School students served. 🎓

The community of Toledo played a significant role in first recruiting Western College over 100 years ago. The community continued its relationship with the State of Iowa when the campus became the Iowa Juvenile Home, and many residents were proud members of the staff over the years. There is long proud history of the campus in Toledo.
In 2021 the biggest project imaginable for the campus started to take shape…the 83.4% approval of the school bond to transform the main building and portion of the campus into a new modern learning space for the South Tama Community School District Middle School.
THE RESULT…Modernized facilities support specialized, developmentally appropriate learning for our middle schoolers, promoting collaboration, independence, and specialized instruction. With over 400 middle school kids at South Tama, that’s a lot of reasons to LIKE and help us make the finals!
