Last up in our different type of strokes is the hemorrhagic stroke or bleeding in the brain. Hemorrhagic strokes are caused by a weakened blood vessel that ruptures and bleeds into the surrounding brain. Like the plumbing in the house, think of a burst pipe. Symptoms include but are not limited too a sudden/severe headache, nausea and vomiting, loss of consciousness, speech issues, weakness or paralysis on one side of the body, and dizziness or loss of balance. Immediate medical attention is necessary.

If you are someone you know experiences any of these symptoms, call 911 immediately!”

Today we’re going to talk about ischemic strokes.

Ischemic or occlusive strokes is where there is a clot (or occlusion) in one or more of the blood vessels in your brain not allowing blood to reach the entire brain. Think of this like plumbing in your sink or toilet. If there is clog, nothing can pass through causing serious issues. Symptoms include but are not limited too facial drooping, slurred speech or difficulty speaking, blurred or double vision, vision loss, dizziness, extremity weakness/numbness/paralysis. If not addressed, these symptoms could be permanent and debilitating. Immediate medical attention is necessary.

If you are someone you know experiences any of these symptoms, call 911 immediately!”

As we talk more about strokes this week, this diagram should help tie everything together. Stay tuned as tomorrow we will discuss ischemic strokes.

Did you know that there are 3 types of strokes? There is the TIA or Transient Ischemic Attack, the ischemic or occlusive stroke, and the hemorrhagic stroke or bleed. Throughout the week we will discuss the three types of strokes and what signs and symptoms you may find with each.

First is a TIA or a Transient Ischemic Attack. This is when there is a temporary disruption in blood flow in the brain. This can cause stroke like symptoms such as facial drooping, slurred speech, weakness/numbness/paralysis in a limb, and/or blurred or double vision. Usually these symptoms will resolve on their own but this is a warning sign that a true stroke could happen. A TIA is considered to be your “free” stroke and you should seek medical attention immediately.

The Mercy Mobile Stroke Unit (MSU) was established in 2016. We operate in the pre-hospital emergency setting to provide a rapid, detailed assessment in suspected stroke patients.

The ambulance is equipped with a CT scanner and telemedicine services. We are staffed with a critical care nurse and paramedic, CT technician and specialized physician.

If indicated the MSU is capable of administering tPA, also referred to as “clot busting medication” to improve patient outcome and prevent long term disability.
