The threat of severe weather will be building the next few days, peaking Thursday afternoon and evening with a level 3 (of 5) risk over a large part of central Illinois. Any severe weather today will generally be limited to some brief strong winds, but Wednesday night and especially Thursday have the potential for more intense severe storms. Continue to monitor the forecast for later updates.

Thinking ahead can prevent all sorts of weather-related problems.

For example, we know much of Illinois will see temps in the 90s for at least three days in a row later this week. Planning to have water, stay in the shade as much as possible if you have to be outside, wearing loose and light-colored clothing, and keeping your home cool could be the difference between getting through it and getting heat illness.

Two grain bin incidents in Illinois this past week ended with very different outcomes. One person was rescued. One person did not make it home.

These incidents are a reminder that grain bin emergencies remain one of the most dangerous rescue situations encountered in agricultural communities.

Emergency managers, fire departments, EMS agencies, and agricultural partners should take time to review local capabilities and identify specialized grain bin rescue resources before an emergency occurs. Successful outcomes depend on training, equipment, planning, and relationships that are built long before the call comes in.

OSHA identifies grain engulfment, grain avalanches, bridged grain, and hazardous atmospheres as some of the primary dangers associated with grain bin entry. These hazards can trap or suffocate a worker in seconds.
Do you know who provides grain bin rescue capability in your area? Have local responders exercised together? Have agricultural partners been included in planning discussions?

Preparedness starts today. The best rescue is the one that never has to happen.
