In case you missed it: The Shoalwater Bay Wellness Center and Community Development and Planning team hosted a Friday Family Gathering and “S’more Fun” event on July 31, bringing Tribal families together for an afternoon and evening of creativity, connection and fun ahead of General Council.

Participants enjoyed traditional and non-traditional crafts, including painting, weaving and beading, along with tours of the Hatchery and Museum. The day also included a spaghetti meal provided by the Shoalwater Bay Kitchen and wrapped up with s’mores and stargazing at the evacuation tower.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and who helped make the gathering a success. Hats off to Delia Culp, Risa Thomas, Sophia Anderson, Hazel McKenny, Ashley Hatton, Roberta Pulsifer and Sabina Harris. We’re grateful for opportunities to come together as a community and share time with one another.

Preparedness is part of protecting our community and our lands: Each year, the Shoalwater Bay Indian Tribe ensures its fire equipment is functioning properly and ready when needed. Earlier this summer, staff tested the fire truck’s pumps, feed lines and nozzles and addressed mechanical issues to ensure the equipment is ready to support related mitigation efforts on Tribal lands.

The fire truck provides an additional resource that can be coordinated with South Beach Regional Fire Authority and the Washington State Department of Natural Resources during an incident. Maintaining this equipment is an important part of protecting our natural resources and being prepared to respond quickly to related hazards.

New tsunami projections from Washington State officials, based on a tsunami originating in Alaska, provide important information for coastal communities and reinforce the value of planning ahead.

New statewide tsunami modeling for an Alaska tsunami is now available. This is a MODEL. An earthquake has not happened.

This graphic shows estimated wave arrival times from this modeled Alaska tsunami scenario. Unlike a local tsunami, you won't feel the earthquake that generates a distant tsunami from Alaska. It will take an estimated 3.5–4 hours to reach Washington’s outer coast, which gives you valuable time to take protective action.
If a Tsunami Warning is issued, grab your go bag, follow your community's tsunami evacuation routes, and head inland to high ground.
