The Monroe County Historical Association is inviting quilters of all abilities and skill levels to participate in the “Stars and Stitches Forever” Quilt Challenge. Following the guidelines, quilters are asked to create a piece of art that interprets their journey (or their family’s journey) of migration or immigration to America and/or the area now known as Monroe County, PA. This challenge is part of the county-wide celebrations planned for 2026 to honor the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

The challenge comes not only in interpreting the theme but also in working within specific rules. Each quilt must be 30” by 30” and include at least one star. Traditional or original patterns may be used. Fabrics, colors, and techniques are left to the quilter’s choice.

Monroe County Historical Association Executive Director Amy Leiser said, “The 'Stars and Stitches Forever' Quilt Challenge offers artists the opportunity to create a meaningful quilt that tells their personal story through the use of fabrics, stitches, and images. Quilters will share their connection to the community, their family, and the broader American experience.”

Linda Post Bushkofsky, Monroe County Historical Association Board member and quilter, reflected on the history of quilting, saying, “Throughout our country’s history, quilts have been made to keep people warm and to feed the soul as artistic expressions. Now it’s time to honor this momentous anniversary with quilts unique to Monroe County.”

Quilts are due by 3:00 pm on Friday, February 27, 2026, and will be accepted from February 3 through the deadline. Challenge quilts will be exhibited in the Monroe County Historical Association’s Hughes Community Room in the new Heritage Center from April 1 through July 31, 2026.

The Monroe County Historical Association owns over 100 quilts of various patterns and sizes. Experienced quilters created some of these quilts, while others were made by first-time sewers, all from Monroe County. As part of the “Stars and Stitches Forever” Quilt Challenge, a selection of quilts from this collection will be showcased in a special exhibition. The quilts chosen for display will highlight their relevance to the challenge, focusing on patriotic themes and colors, star motifs, and a particularly notable quilt depicting the likeness of the Marquis de Lafayette.

Description
As liaison to the Coolbaugh Township Veterans Committee on the Board of Supervisors, I extend a special invitation to a township event.

As the events of September 11, 2001, anniversary draws near, Coolbaugh Township will be honoring our medical and health professionals with a First Responders Recognition and Appreciation Ceremony on September 6, 2025. We honor their unrelenting and dedicated service to the health and well--being of everyone they come in contact with in their daily professional lives and sometimes in their daily civilian lives. We invite these priceless heroes to join us as we say THANK YOU FOR THEIR SERVICE. It is being held at the township Military Memorial located at 5520 Municipal Drive, Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania.

We celebrate and extend gratitude to these unsung heroes who too often are overlooked and underappreciated. They serve and attend to their patients with tenacity and true heartfelt care and concern to make patients whole and healthy once again. The Keynote speaker for the ceremony is Lorna O'Farrell-MacIntire. The event will also include an open mic for anyone who experienced or was affected personally or collaterally by the tragic and brutal attack on our precious United State of America on 9/11.

We look forward to your attendance.
