Several members of the Tioga Ambulance Service have been actively learning at the 50th Anniversary Conference over the last few days. Tonight we are honored to announce 3 members who were nominated and won awards. Congratulations to Joel Shaffett, EMT for the Rising Star EMT award (given to an EMT with less than 3 years of service who shows exemplary skills) , to Nathan Germundson, EMT for the Distinguished Provider award (given to an EMT with over 25 years of service) and to Travis Lesmeister, CPR/Driver for the Siren Award (given to a member who goes above and beyond and is not licensed). If you see one of these members or their family members around town please make sure to thank them for their dedication and volunteering for their community.

Today we would like to recognize Michelle Grubb, wife of volunteer firefighter Alex and their dog Smokey. Recently Michelle and Smokey completed training to become a First Responder Therapy Dog Team. Michelle and Smokey are often seen during community events with Smokey strutting in his turnout coat. Now he has a vest he gets to wear as he’s officially on the job.
Michelle and Smokey had to complete intense training and testing to become a First Responder Therapy Dog Team. Their dedication has not gone unnoticed.
Michelle tells us “We are incredibly honored to share that we are the only First Responder Therapy Dog Team in Western North Dakota — and one of only two teams in the entire state. That makes serving Tioga and the surrounding communities even more meaningful to us.
Being a First Responder Therapy Dog Team means we’re there for our firefighters, law enforcement, EMS, and other first responders. Animals are known to lower anxiety, lower blood pressure and lower stress.”

Next time you see Michelle or Smokey please thank them for their time and dedication to the first responders in the area.

We were fortunate enough to have Jennifer Murphy from Metro Area Ambulance come and provide training today with our members. Members were trained on caring for the trauma patient, hemorrhage control and effective communication. We are grateful to have members on our department, surrounding departments, and students from our current EMT class spend their day training to be ready for any need that arises!

On Saturday, October 11th, the Tioga Fire & Ambulance Department hosted a Pancake Feed to close out Fire Prevention Week. In a generous show of community support, the good will donations generated from this event, in the amount of $3,659, were donated to the Tioga Historical Society. This contribution will aid in preserving local history and support ongoing museum initiatives at the Norseman Museum.
The Norseman Museum, operated by the Tioga Historical Society, serves as a vital repository of the region’s rich cultural and historical heritage. The donation will help fund its current expansion project, ensuring that the stories of Tioga’s past continue to educate and inspire future generations.
“We’re proud to support the Historical Society and the Norseman Museum,” said a representative from the Fire & Ambulance Department. “Preserving our town’s history is important, and we’re happy to contribute to that mission.”
