Frankie Muniz has made the decision to step aside from the No. 33 Dr. Sheffield’s Ford F-150 for Saturday’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, giving Luke Baldwin the opportunity to compete in the 175-lap regular-season finale.
Muniz said the decision came down to doing what gives the team the best opportunity to score as many points as possible.
With Team Reaume bringing two trucks to New Hampshire, Baldwin arrived ready to race and fought to make the field. Now, thanks to Muniz voluntarily giving up his seat in a qualified truck, Baldwin will get his chance behind the wheel of the No. 33.
“Luke is one of the most talented young drivers in this garage,” Muniz said. “Sitting him out when we have a qualified truck that can put him in the field doesn’t make sense for anyone.”
It’s a remarkable act of teamwork from a driver with a full-time ride. Muniz could have kept his seat, but instead chose to put the team and its owner points first.
Team owner Josh Reaume praised Muniz’s decision, calling it an example of exactly the kind of teammate and person he is. With the Truck Series regular season ending Saturday and valuable owner points still on the line, the team believes Baldwin gives the No. 33 its strongest opportunity to maximize its results.
And Baldwin knows just how significant the opportunity is.
“Frankie didn’t have to do this,” Baldwin said. “He has a full-time ride and every right to keep it. This is a huge opportunity, and I’m going to treat it that way.”
From failing to make the field to suddenly getting a chance to race because a fellow competitor stepped aside for the good of the team — that’s a moment Luke Baldwin won't forget.
