TGIF! Welcome to the final day of EMS Week!

Today, I want to spotlight a recent incident that occurred in our district. This call involved nearly everything we discussed throughout EMS Week and highlights how every piece of the EMS system works together to give patients the best possible chance during an emergency.

This successful effort was possible because of the combined actions of citizens, dispatchers, first responders, EMS providers, equipment, and our hospital partners:

• Early Hands-Only CPR was started immediately by a citizen.
• A TNFD call member and Police Officer arrived on scene and took over CPR efforts.
• Due to the seriousness of the incident, the engine responded alongside the ambulance.
• Dual sequential defibrillation was possible because the engine’s Zoll monitor was available to pair with the ambulance Zoll monitor.
• Two paramedics were on scene to manage the complexity of the incident and provide advanced care.
• Concord Hospital Concord Campus was selected for transport because of its advanced cardiac capabilities.

This incident is a perfect example of how survival depends on an entire system working together — from the first 911 call to advanced hospital care.

Please see the spotlight below from Concord Hospital.

Welcome to Day 4 of EMS week.

Today we are talking about how TNFD deploys our staff and apparatus. TNFD has response policies in place to guide our staff on which apparatus to bring to each emergency type. We also rely on 911 to “code” each medical call to let us know how severe the emergency is.

TNFD has 23 medical providers on staff. 8 Paramedics (3 are RSI as we talked about yesterday), 12 AEMTs, and 3 EMTs. We have 4 personnel per shift 24 hours a day. Each shift has 2 Paramedics and 2 AEMTs that respond from Center Street Station. Center Street has an ambulance and a fire engine. Call members respond from Park Street Station. Park Street has an ambulance, a fire engine, and other fire apparatus.

The first ambulance responds to medical calls with 2 personnel. The engine will respond and assist with more serious medical emergencies coded “delta” and “echo” by 911. We average 6 to 7 emergency calls per day.

If there is an additional emergency during the first emergency, our engine crew will respond to the second emergency. The call staff will respond to Park Street Station and get the second ambulance. Our fire engines have advanced level medical equipment that can start emergency medical care before an ambulance arrives. We average 1 to 2 overlapping emergencies per day.

We also rely on our mutual aid partners. We routinely receive ambulances from Franklin, Sanbornton, and Belmont.

On Monday morning, Rusty’s Towing donated their time and equipment to assist us with removing an out-of-service dry hydrant behind Tilton House of Pizza. We would like to sincerely thank Rusty’s for their continued support of the department.

Whenever we need them, they are there. From supplying vehicles for training, to assisting on emergency scenes with vehicle removal and stabilization, Rusty’s has been an incredible partner to TNFD. They have even come to the rescue for a few of our own vehicles over the years.

We are fortunate to have community partners like Rusty’s Towing who are always willing to lend a hand when needed. Thank you for everything you do to support our department and our community!

Welcome to Day 3 of EMS Week!

Today we are talking about the different people who respond to your emergency. Not everyone arriving on the ambulance is the same type of provider — each certification level brings different training, skills, and capabilities to help care for patients.

TNFD has four different levels of EMS providers:

EMT (Emergency Medical Technician)
EMTs provide basic emergency medical care, including CPR, bleeding control, oxygen administration, and patient assessment. They stabilize patients, assist with transportation, and support higher-level providers during medical emergencies.

AEMT (Advanced Emergency Medical Technician)
AEMTs provide all EMT-level care while also performing certain advanced procedures such as starting IVs, administering a limited range of medications, and advanced airway management. They serve as an important bridge between basic and paramedic-level emergency medical care.

Paramedic
Paramedics provide the highest level of prehospital emergency medical care, including advanced cardiac care, medication administration, airway management, and invasive procedures. They are trained to make complex medical decisions and manage critically ill or injured patients in emergency situations.

RSI Paramedic (Rapid Sequence Intubation Paramedic)
RSI Paramedics are specially trained paramedics authorized to perform rapid sequence intubation, a procedure used to secure a patient’s airway using sedation and paralytic medications. They provide advanced critical care interventions for severely ill or injured patients experiencing life-threatening airway or breathing emergencies.

No matter the certification level, every provider on scene plays a critical role in delivering emergency care to our community. Thank you to all of our EMS providers for your dedication, professionalism, and commitment to helping others every day.

Welcome to Day 2 of EMS Week!

Today, we’re talking about YOU! The first person on scene of an emergency is often a member of the public, and you can truly make the difference between life and death.

The very first thing you should always do in an emergency is call 911! Please do not call the station directly — we may not be there. 911 dispatchers are specially trained to help you through emergencies and can guide you through lifesaving skills while responders are on the way. Don’t worry — while they are talking with you, they are also dispatching us to the emergency. They are excellent multi-taskers!!

We encourage everyone to take a basic first aid course and learn Hands-Only CPR. Hands-Only CPR helps keep oxygenated blood pumping through the body when the heart is no longer effectively doing so. Check out the fact sheet below to learn more.

Lastly, let’s talk about Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). AEDs are located throughout many places in our community. Make sure you know where they are located in your workplace or public spaces you frequent. 911 dispatchers also know where many AEDs are located and can direct you to one during an emergency.

If your workplace has an AED, please make sure it is registered with 911. You can register an AED here:

Happy EMS Week 2026!!!

Every day this week Tilton-Northfield Fire & EMS (TNFD) will spotlight something about the department or community that enables us to provide excellent emergency care to our community. On Friday, we will highlight an incident that utilized an important piece from each spotlight throughout the week.

Today, we are highlighting our ambulance transport system. TNFD typically transports patients to one of three Concord Hospital campuses. The decision regarding which hospital to utilize is based on several factors, with the patient’s specific medical emergency always being the top priority.

Concord Hospital is an outstanding partner to TNFD. We are supported by their Medical Director and EMS Coordinator, who help guide and oversee the high level of care we provide. Concord Hospital also provides state-of-the-art training opportunities through their SIM lab and educators, helping our providers maintain and strengthen critical skills. In addition, many of our EMS and pharmacy supplies are purchased through Concord Hospital, further supporting our ability to deliver high-quality patient care every day.
