A toilet that runs quietly may seem harmless, but even a small leak can create ongoing water demand: causing your well pump or water treatment system to cycle more often than usual.

Before assuming your filtration system is damaged, check the toilet:

1. Remove the tank lid.
2. Add a few drops of food coloring to the tank water.
3. Wait 10–15 minutes without flushing.
4. If colored water appears in the bowl, the toilet is leaking and may need a new flapper or flush valve.

Addressing the plumbing issue first can help reduce unnecessary water use and cycling. A leaking toilet does not automatically mean your filtration equipment is damaged, but persistent changes in system operation should be evaluated.

Thinking about reverse osmosis for your home? A point-of-use RO system, such as the new iSpring system, is designed to treat water at a specific location: typically a dedicated faucet at the kitchen sink.

That makes it especially useful for drinking and cooking water. When properly configured for your water conditions, RO can reduce many dissolved contaminants and improve the taste and quality of the water you use most.

But point-of-use RO is not a whole-home solution. It does not treat the water used for showers, baths, laundry, or other household fixtures. It also does not address issues such as hard water, iron staining, sediment, or sulfur odor throughout the home unless those concerns are handled with additional treatment equipment.

The right solution depends on what is in your water and what you want to accomplish. A household focused on better drinking and cooking water may need a different approach than one dealing with whole-home hardness, iron, or odor.

• Septic maintenance: Regular inspection, pumping, and prompt repairs help protect the soil and groundwater around your home.
• Groundwater movement: Water can travel through soil, bedrock, and fractures in ways that aren’t always obvious from the surface.
• What goes down the drain: Unused medications should go through an approved medication take-back program, while paints, solvents, pesticides, and other chemicals belong at a household hazardous-waste collection: not in sinks, toilets, or septic systems.
