As we approach Memorial Day, I want to take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of this important day. Memorial Day is a time to honor and remember the brave men and women of our armed forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage and dedication to protecting our freedoms will never be forgotten.

The Rabun County Sheriff’s Office will be closed on Memorial Day in observance of the holiday. However, our deputies will continue serving and protecting our community throughout the day and night. I want to personally thank each of our deputies, dispatchers, and first responders who sacrifice time with their own families to ensure the safety of others during the holiday weekend.

As you gather with family and friends, I encourage everyone to take a moment to remember the heroes who gave their lives for this nation and the freedoms we enjoy every day.

Please celebrate safely, look out for one another, and know that your Rabun County deputies will be out on the roads working hard to keep our community safe.

I want to make the citizens of Rabun County aware that the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous reports from individuals advising they are receiving scam phone calls from people claiming to be deputies with our office.

In several cases, the callers are even using the names of actual Sheriff’s Office employees.
These callers are telling people they have active warrants and demanding payment over the phone to avoid arrest.

Let me be very clear: the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office does not call citizens to advise them of warrants or request money or payment over the phone.
If you receive one of these calls, do not provide any personal information, banking information, gift card numbers, or payment of any kind. Do not engage with these scammers.

If you have questions about whether a call is legitimate, contact the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office directly using our official phone number.

See the following press release from Sheriff Mark Gerrells.

On May 4, 2026, deputies with the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on U.S. 441 that resulted in the arrest of Billie Jo Jamison, 53, of Rabun Gap.

During the stop, deputies observed indicators of possible criminal activity. A K9 conducted a free-air sniff and alerted to the vehicle. A subsequent search led to the discovery of approximately one pound of suspected methamphetamine concealed under the spare tire.

Jamison was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Rabun County Detention Center. She is charged with Trafficking Methamphetamine (O.C.G.A. 16-13-31) and Manufacturing, distributing, dispensing, or possessing with intent to distribute controlled substance, ma*****na, or counterfeit substance near park or housing project; establishment of drug-free zones in violation if O.C.G.A. 16-13-32.5.

I am proud of the work our deputies continue to do to identify and remove illegal narcotics from our community. Cases like this highlight the importance of proactive law enforcement and strong interagency cooperation in combating drug trafficking.

This investigation remains ongoing.
