Columbian students put their boat designs to the test yesterday morning! 🚤

Working with partners, students in Mr. Aaron Schmits’ Design class brainstormed ideas, sketched plans and built prototypes. They then tested their boats in a stock tank at the stadium, adding water bottles and jugs to see how much weight each design could hold while staying afloat. Two of the designs actually held all of the water bottles and jugs!

The challenge is part of a design process that asks students to collaborate, reflect on their results and think about what they could improve.

“When the going gets tough, the tough choose to go on.”

That’s the message Ron Derry shared with Noble’s fourth graders through The GOOD Program, sponsored by the Lions Club.

After speaking with the entire fourth grade, Ron spent 30 minutes with each classroom sharing encouragement and talking about overcoming obstacles and perseverance. His visits have positively impacted thousands of fourth graders in Tiffin over the years.

Thank you, Ron and the Lions Club of Tiffin, for bringing this meaningful experience to our students and reminding them to keep going when things get tough! 💙💛

Tiffin Middle School has received a $2,050 grant from the Tiffin Community Foundation’s Youth Advisory Council to replenish its Hygiene Closet.

The closet gives students in grades 6-8 private access to necessities such as deodorant, shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products and other personal-care items.

Students can submit a confidential online form without having to ask for help face-to-face. They can pick up their items after school or have staff discreetly place them in their locker.

“If a student is worried about their personal hygiene or appearance, that becomes another barrier they carry into the classroom.” TMS counselor Melissa Mellott said. “The Hygiene Closet allows us to say, ‘We’ve got you,’ in a way that is private, supportive and free from shame.”

The grant was made possible through the generosity of the late Sherman and Virginia White, who established a trust fund to support charitable work in the Tiffin community.

Thank you to the Tiffin Community Foundation, its Youth Advisory Council and the Sherman and Virginia White trust for helping our students feel confident, supported and ready to learn.

Long before Greg Williamson became superintendent of Tiffin City Schools, he was a kid growing up in Bettsville and learning what hard work looked like from his parents.

His father, Roger, drove a truck for more than 30 years and later became a school bus driver. His mother, Saundra, spent more than 30 years serving students as a school cook.

Those lessons still shape the way he leads today.

“I’m not one who feels like I need respect just because of my title,” Williamson said. “I think you have to earn it.”

Meet the person behind the title in the first installment of our new “Leading Tiffin City Schools” series.
