🌱 Schools at the Heart of the SBAE Movement 🌱

Schools are the perfect place to spread new farming ideas and give students skills that matter. With hands-on, experiential learning, teachers bring lessons to life - in classrooms and on family farms.

This approach gets parents involved, keeps kids (especially girls!) in school, and shows that agriculture can be a real career. Students use their new skills to earn income, invest in their education, and share knowledge across their communities.

School gardens make the program self-sustaining, while embedding SBAE in the curriculum helps these innovations reach every corner of the country. 🌍💚

Thanks to the 4-H Club, a group of determined women in Beadatuo, Liberia, turned inspiration into action.

The Kwakesor United Women’s Group began when parents of 4-H members attended a farmer field school, led by the 4-H field officer, where they learned modern agricultural techniques. Motivated by what they learned, they decided to organize themselves into a cooperative - living up to their name Kwakesor, which means “let’s do it well” in the Gio language.

With training from 4-H in raised beds, proper crop spacing, and innovative lowland planting, their farms now produce vegetables, dry-season corn, and lowland rice. Many of the women have taken these new practices back to their own farms, boosting productivity and livelihoods across the community.

📈 From a 500 m² vegetable plot to over an acre of rice fields, the 4-H innovations are proving that when women learn together and experiment boldly, they can transform both their farms and their futures. 💚

This is Micheal. 🌱 At just 17, he turned a small backyard into a thriving garden - tomatoes, peppers, cassava, potatoes… all grown through skills he learned in his 4-H club.

His first tomato harvest brought in LRD 4,500.
Enough to pay for his school materials, buy new shoes, and support his younger siblings.

With limited means but endless ambition, he’s now dreaming of studying agriculture and becoming a field technician for his community.

Real impact starts young. ✨

We use the power of research, advocacy, and partnerships to expand SBAE programs across Sub-Saharan Africa. These programs keep youth in school, increase food security, and transform communities.

Here’s how we make it happen:
1️⃣ Build Evidence - Partnering with researchers to generate robust evidence that strengthens SBAE programs.

2️⃣ Transform Policy - Mobilizing partners to integrate SBAE into national and global development priorities.

3️⃣ Catalyze Funds - Engaging donors, governments, and institutions to unlock funding for local programs.

4️⃣ Strengthen Capacity - Developing curricula, training teachers, and expanding SBAE programs nationwide.

Parents play a critical role in the success of students enrolled in School-Based Agricultural Education (SBAE).

We recently sat down with parent groups in Margibi County, Liberia to learn more about their experiences.

What can schools do to better engage with parents?
