The City Council observed Pride Month Tuesday night by presenting Unity Conejo with a proclamation celebrating LGBTQ residents and their many contributions to our community. This follows on the Council’s recent unanimous vote to reaffirm our city’s #1 goal of being an “equitable, accessible, safe, welcoming, and inclusive” government and community for all residents.

I am an ally of all who work for inclusion – regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, skin color, national origin, intellectual or physical ability, or faith.

*This* is how we break the cycle of hatred and intolerance.

This week the City Council joined with CVUSD in observing Juneteenth, the annual holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the US. This is an important event in US history. As Marlena Wallace, chair of CVUSD’s African-American District Advisory Council noted, African-American history *is* American history. Happy Juneteenth!

Tuesday evening the City Council voted unanimously to award nearly $200,000 in social-service grants to 34 local nonprofits. I’m grateful to all these groups for providing vital services to some of our most vulnerable residents. And I’ll have more to say soon about the volunteers that make their services possible. Thank you!

Opening the city’s first homeless shelter was a milestone. In its first year of operation, Thrive Grove has helped reduce unsheltered homelessness in Thousand Oaks by 46%. TOPD reports there are now zero encampments in the city. Better still, residents are moving through this temporary facility and into permanent supportive housing, leading safer and more productive lives.

Thanks to Many Mansions, Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission, County of Ventura - Government, Dignity Moves, and all at the City of Thousand Oaks - Local Government who’ve worked so hard to provide safety, dignity, and hope for all residents.

Mention the terms “low income” or “affordable housing” and many people think of dire poverty. The reality in 2026 is that in Ventura County, a family of 4 earning nearly $126,000 is now “low income.” The same family earning nearly $163,000 is now “moderate income.” These are countywide figures; in Thousand Oaks, the figures are higher still.

Housing for residents in this category is – by far – our biggest unmet need. When people ask if affordable housing is needed, this table shows why.
